Road Bikes to Morocco

My mate and I (who happens to be my brother in law) are off to Morocco on a 2 week pass. I ride a XJR1300 and he is on a Harley Wide Glide. We have travelled around Europe on these bikes and enjoyed the tour. We now want to go and taste Morocco . We plan to have around 10 days in Morocco itself allowing a few days to travel to and from Gib. We would appreciate any advice from fellow travellers on suitable routes bearing in mind our lack of ground clearance etc. We don't want to fall into the tarmac road to the cities tyoe of trip.
Any advice greatfuly received.

Basic touring in Morocco is pretty straightforward. Have a look at a Michelin map. All the paved roads will be fine. If you're reasonably skilled (or sufficiently foolhardy), some of the unpaved roads will also be fine. But in a week and a half or so you're not going to get very far anyway; just pick some destinations based on your interests and find the paved routes that connect them.

The main hazards on this sort of trip involve city driving, which might be a bit disconcerting on a big bike. OTOH, maybe you've been riding in Rome or Athens (for example) and are fully prepared for this.

enjoy,

Mark

Find Tim Cullis's Morocco Info Thread on this site for comprehensive info on what you want.

You'll be fine. Only thing to really avoid is travelling at night. Sand blows across the road and the local surface repair technique is to rip up the tarmac, wait a year then replace it. Hit sand/gravel at speed and it can ruin your trip.

Tim's reports are great.

I think the Morocco reports over at UKGSER's are equally good to read.

And there's a great story on a UK camping/caravaning website of a couple in a van on their first Moroc trip, I mention this to show that one doesn't have to be into hardcore 4x4 or adventure bike riding to enjoy the place.

Last April we did 1500 miles (2400 km) in Morocco on a GoldWing. We had no problems, but we didn't do any of the piste's that you will read about on the UKGS'er site. To read about our trip start here Morocco and go on for several pages more.
