Libya : Worth the hassle?

Hola!

I'm planning on setting off from Scotland to Egypt next month and am in the process of sorting out my return route. As I am heading down through Turkey, Syria and Jordan I like the idea of returning through Libya and Tunisia. I've been pricing the costs of a guide for the trip of Libya and it seems like it is going to be very expensive (at least £100 per day), plus I really can't be bothered with having a guide in toe or vice versa. The alternative option is doubling back and returning via different parts of Jordan, Syria and Turkey.

What is the general concensus here? Is Libya worth the hoop jumping?

Thanks,

Liam

There were some earlier posts about not needing a guide for just a coast road transit.

I believe this could be true (the goalposts are never still for too long in Libya) but it makes for a pretty dull transit along the north coast road. So you wont see the best of Libya but you will have crossed Libya. Ferry from Tunis back to Genoa (cheaper) or Marseille is about 250 quid.

Libya

Hi there!

It is possible to get a transit visa for Libya. However so far I have only heard from people who got that in Tunis. I don't know if it is possible to do it in Cairo. (for details check our webpage) Also as Chris said, with the transit visa you can't go South.

The price you list for the guide is too much. Don't pay more than 65 Euros per day for a guide with a car and 25 Euros if the guide can drive with you. Here is an agency which will do it at this price. (again for more details check our webpage)

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
