Large apologies guys. While being highly efficient deleting a post by a nasty spammer, I went and accidently deleted the whole thread! I've just recovered the text via Google by searching their cache, but the copy/paste back into a new thread has messed everything else up.

Sorry. Hope it's still useable. If quoting somebody, maybe just copy/paste the relevant bit into your post.

the best time of year to go?
hi,
when would be the best time of year to start a RTW? going east to west.
thanks to paperwork our plans have been put back , we where orignaly going in the middle of augast, but now we are looking at a delay of 8 to 10 weeks and i am a little botherd about hitting real bad weather in out of the way places. our bike is a bmw r80/7 with knobbles (road bias). heavy but managble.

basicly if we set of in late september early october what do you think of being in the ukrain or kazakhstan then?

Taxes back!
Hi,

Apart from seasons, another idea on decidind when to go: depending on your tax/revenues system, leaving by July might be good from a fiscal point of view.

I put it other way: leaving in January you will pay all your taxes for the previous (whole) year you worked. Then you come back after a year traveling, find a job quickly and once again you will pay full taxes for that new (whole) year.

So, avoid that, go by July and get the most back and pay the least the year you come back. That sudden money will help to recover your economy!

I think most of us pay as we earn in UK, no big tax bills unless you are self-employed/run a small business., but good point for those that do have to pay taxes like that.

I don't know about UK, but I'll try an example, just in case it may be applicable (I am sure you pay a proportional % to your total income).

a) Etherelda earns 3.000 GBP/month (36.000 GBP/year) and pays 30% tax (pls, this is a basic approach, there are tax brackets; and sorry for probable wrong terminology, just take the example).

b) Esteban earns 1.500 GBP/month (18.000 GBP/year) and pays 15% tax.

Etherelda decides to take a year on leave by the end of June and go for a 1 year trip. So that same year, she taxed for an expected 36000GBP/year income, when she only earned half of it. So, tax back.

Year after, starting in July, she will earn half the total salary (6 months), so she should pay less taxes.

It all depends if you pay taxes on a monthly bases because you are an employee, or if you pay yearly (as it actually happens in Swiss). Either way, you pay less taxes.

That means, nice surprise, fewer costs. Is it applicable for you in UK?

PS: Poor Esteban paid all his taxes and stayed at home. Pity him!

This is most definately relevant for the uk...if you don't work a full tax year you should put in for a refund. Doesn't matter if you're self employed, run a business, pay as you earn, it's worth putting in for the refund. As a matter of principal even if it's only a fiver you get back it's a fiver less that the tax man has stolen.

Also if you have savings that you're living off while on the road and don't have any income above the tax free threshold then make sure you're not paying tax on the interest you get on those savings. Very easy to contact your financial institution and tell them your account should be tax free. Even if you haven't done this you can still grab a form from the directgov website and get a refund on any tax you have paid after the event.
