malaysia through indo

Hi all,
having come over land from Germany its great having so many sisters and brothers around, Iran and Pakistan y'all were pretty thin on the ground, i will miss the meeting unfortunately in Thailand, kinda gotta keep on moving. anyway, from the threads ive read travelling from penang into Belawan is the way to go, I dont have a visa but apparently i can aquire one on arrival (30 days)

I plan to travel through Indo to West or East Timor and travel over to Darwin only my funds for this leg are only $1500 AUS or $800 Euro say. Can it be done? I have more money for travel over to Oz in a shipping fund. I would just prefer to spend the money it would cost to fly and ship from Malaysia on riding through Indonesia.

Anyway,

1.My ownership papers are in German? will that matter i have a carnet
2. can i make it to timor in thirty days?
3. daily costs?
4. what are the costs in hopping over the Islands?
5. what other paper work / documents will i need?

Indonesia is VERY cheap - I think it worked out to be the cheapest country for us when we rode UK-NZ

I haven't got costs to hand so can't tell you average daily costs or the costs for ferries between the islands - but all was CHEAP.

30 days very short time to travel trhough but possible - I've met others that did this. You will spend almost all your time on the road though...

Ferries between the islands become less frequent the further east you go & schedules change regularly - ask ahead what day the ferry leaves your next port.

I don't know how you will get on without a carnet - good luck. Keep us posted!

30 days is doable, especially the first leg, ferrys are very frequent,Sumatra,Java,Bali,Lombok,Sumbawa,my guess is you ll need 3-5 days in Sumatra,3-5 days in Java (including some sightseeing), 3-4 days Bali, through Lombok,take the north side of the islandalmost no traffic ,is a matter of hours (suggest take a break, it s quiet), do some further planning and then of to Sumbawa, 3-5 days (little to sightseeing, but very relaxing and friendly),ferry to flores, daily except fridays,from Flores, 3-5 days, to Timor,here i do not have a lot of info, better check it out on the spot in Ende,main ferry port, have fun

30 days to ride all the way from Belawan in Sumatera to Timor is unrealistic. Even with 60 days you will not have much extra time to relax. Especially in Sumatera, the roads there are awful and will be very slow going in places.

Why don't you get a 60 day visa in advance in Penang? Its very easy to get if you have a carnet, use the carnet as your "onward ticket" and explain that you will be leaving Indonesia by LAND and how would you get a ticket? If you don't have a carnet, you will probably have a tough time.

Otherwise, plan on getting the 30 day visa for riding to Bali, then leave the bike in Bali, fly to Singapore and get a new 30 day visa on the flight back.

Indonesia is huge, calculate a direct distance on the map from Sumatra to Timor and multiply by 1.5 to 2 and that is the mileage you will need to cover. I believe we rode 5000 miles on this route through Indonesia!

Thanks for posting repys guys, i love this sight. I will get a 60 day visa from Songklah in Thailand, giving me sixty days and follow plans as directed by you guys. I do have a carnet.
