North American Off-Road routes?
 

Hello,
I am in the planning stages of my first adventure tour and I am having trouble getting started. It is a little less ambitious than many of the adventures here, but I need to get my feet wet somehow.
The first part of my trip is fairly straight forward. My riding partner lives in Iowa so I plan to make a fast trip there on main roads so there is no issue with that. What I am having trouble with is finding off-highway routes in the north central to north eastern part of the coutry. If any body can point me in the direction of information or make recommendations about a route it would be deeply appreciated. I would like to spend as much time off pavement as possible, I will have 3-4 weeks to ride while my partner will likely manage two weeks off, the trip is tenativley set for this spring/summer. Heading north into Canada is possible also.
Or from a different angle I suppose I could ask, "If you lived in Maine, and your buddy in Iowa where would you go for a two week adventure?" Keeping in mind I have more transit time than he will.
