North Africa

Hi, I´m from Finland and like´d ride as solo from UK by ferry to Bilbao Spain from South Spain to North Morocco -Algeria- Tunis and Libya and from Tripol by ferry to Italy or Creece in March- April 2013. Does somebody knows is it possible and safe for a lonly rider, is there petrol available and roads good enough for Triumph Rocket 111.

It will be absolutely fine and very easy with the possible exception of the Libya element. I made an identical trip with the exception that I used public transport, however I made this trip before the Arab spring. Even then, getting the Libyan visa was a complex and drawn out process, now I do not know whether it is safe or even possible for a tourist. You could easily take the ferry down to Morocco, travel across as far as Tunis and then get a Ferry up to Italy and this trip will be completely safe and as far as I'm aware will pose no difficulty at all in obtaining visas. However, if you are determined to at the Libyan element then I am sorry to say that I can offer no advise and would suggest you research current conditions in Libya.

I'm no expert, but you might wanna check, if Morocco/Algeria border is still closed, like it was at least a few years ago. For a lone motorcyclist there are probably safety issues in Algeria, that should be taken seriously (but I'm not saying its impossible, just possibly risky), and crossing borders onwards from there with the vehicle (and visas) might also be a problem.

#2, how did you get from Morocco to Algeria?

Essien 29 Oct 2012 21:11

As far as I am aware the border between Morocco and Algeria has reopened? It was scheduled to reopen the summer just gone by. Otherwise it is possible to cross by boat by going up to Almeria and back down again, this may sound a bit like retracing your steps but you get get from Nador to Almeria in a day and Almeria to Ghazaouet the next day so you hardly have to set foot back in Europe.

Algeria is perfectly safe provided you stay in the North, keep close to the coast.

I went on a little passenger ferry but with a car I think you would have to take the big boat to Almeria and then back.

Motorcycle refueling about 350 km and the need to know including gasoline supply potential.

For Moroccan and Algerian nationals only. For special events. On specific days. It's still a "closed" border to foreign nationals.

To the OP, better cross the Med from Spain to Tunisia and continue from there.

Hi,
Libya is doable from west to east as there are a couple of posts here on the HUBB from people who have done just that recently. However, I know of no ferry from Libya to Europe. Libyan coastal road is doable on a Rocket, petrol is about 12c per L.
Best of luck.
CJ.
