London to Ulaanbaatar

Hello there,

Over next July/August ( 9 weeks ) I am intending to travel in a group of three to Ulaanbaatar through Europe-Ukraine-Kazakhstan and have a few questions!

(1) I am not particularly concerned about the initial route through Europe and would like to spend as much time as possible in Kazakhstan and Mongolia. Having said that, I would like to chill a bit in the alpine section ( Switzerland-Austria). We will crossing at Geneva so which are the best towns/passes worth seeing en route to the hungarian border where we will begin to pick up the pace again.

(2) Considering the distance, what sort of mileage should we attempt to do per day? Although there is time pressure, I would love to not be constantly looking at the GPS. We will be traveling on KLR650s.

(3) Finally, how long should I attempt to spend in europe before hitting kazakh and mongolia?

Sorry for the long post but I would appreciate any input!

Sounds like a great trip ahead! Have a good read through other peoples travel logs on here and adv rider etc and compare their route with your one and you'll find plenty place to add ( and remove! ) from your itinerary

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
