My Dream: Bali - Nepal

let´s start with a little introduction:
my name´s max, i´m german, and i wanna go from bali to nepal.

studyin mechanical enigneering atm, will have it finished next year.

i´m 22 atm. i have been to 5 continents, lived in australia for 8 months.
have been on a 1-year trip RTW before, started in canada, finished in bali, a place i fell in love with.

now what i dream of is a trip starting in bali, going to java, sumatra, malaysia, thailand, laos, cambodia, VN if they let me in. and, MAYBE - if they open up the bordes next year- burma, bangladesh, india, nepal.

now the reason i registere here is that i have absolutely ZERO experience on crossing international borders.

so i don´t know munch about whats needed, whats important when going from one country to another.

therefore i hope you can help me with the following questions:

1. buying a bike in bali (indonesia)
- i have been told that i need to be a indonesian citizen to put a bike in my name. is there a way around this? last time i got there, it took 30 mins and 20€ to buy an official drivers license. can the same be done with a bike?

2. what bike to get?
- last time i was in bali, i rented me a "honda tiger GLR". (pic attached) had A LOT of fun with that bike, great acceleration with only 200ccm, took me everywhere, had no problem with bad roads etc.
internet tells me its about 2000€ to buy a brand new one. now unfortunately, it seems to be a bike only sold in indonesia, even the wikipedia entry is held only in indonesian language. anybody knows if they just re-branded the bike and sell it in other SE asia countryis aswell? or is it really just a modell for the indonesian market? in that case, i´d need advice what to buy then.

oh and: should i try and sell the bike in my country of destination? or fly it back to indonesia and sell it there? or just forget about it and drop it next to a road...

3. visas´s?
- which visias do i need? can i get a visa on arrival, or do i need to contact the embassy months ahead while i am still in germany?

4. crossing the borders?
-do i need a carnet de passage? what exaxtly is that? will some bribe money do aswell? do i need to fill out special paperwork?


5. TRIP itself.
any reccomendations where to go, what to do, what to see, what not to see?
which roads to take? should i just stick to SE asia? or get me a plane ticket and fly to india to continiue towards nepal?

Welcome to HU Max!

You'll find there's a LOT of information on the website, and many of your questions can be answered with some reading. e.g. Carnet - there's a link on the left menu to Paperwork - read it and learn.

Read posts on the HUBB here, read some of the Blogs and Ride Tales for more.

Bike special for Indonesia - unlikely to be unique - the model name yes, but based on the same bike sold all over.

Selling in another country - bad idea. Paperwork etc will kill you. Dump it- good idea. Take it back to the country you bought it in - good idea. Which is better cheaper for you?

Have a good look around, and try to research in the appropriate forum for the question- you may find the answer already there.

TIP:
What annoys people is when the question has been asked and answered a hundred times, and then someone asks it again. and again, and again.

Also people have limited time / patience - a single question or two is easy and quick to answer and people are great at that - but long unending lists of questions are too much - people feel like you want them to write the book for you and do all the work for you.

Get HU's "Achievable Dream" series - link at top of page or in the store link - and a book or two such as Chris Scott's Adventure Motorcycling Handbook and they will give you a ton of great info.
