motorbiking in Myanmar....who has done it?
 

Hi there,

I'm planning a motorbike trip around Myanmar at the end of November. I'm still looking for people who have driven in Myanmar.

Does anybody have some info concerning motorbike rentals (dealerships or locals)e.g. prices, rental conditions, places where I can rent etc. in Myanmar.
Also some first hand motorbike experience form this country would be highly appreciated.

I'm also looking for a detailed map of Myanmar e.g. 1.1.000.000 or less. Any contacts or addresses?

Hi Roland, We were in Myanmar last November at Myawadi, across from Mae Sot in Thailand. There was no way we would be allowed into Myanmar with our bike, so we walked across the bridge, but had to be back in Thailand by 5pm. The border had only been opened two weeks before because of shelling. You might try contacting David Unkovich at Golden Triangle rider in Thailand as he has the most up to date info. There was talk of access into Myanmar at the Mae Sai border crossing up north, but there was no way in when we were there. Good Luck Cameron

i wish i could
it would avoid me to ship it from india to tahiland
anyone knows if it s possible ? HOW ? LOADS OF MONEY NEEDED OR EVEN IMPOSSIBLE WITH LOADS OF MONEY ?
and if anyone has shipped a bike from india to thai, i m also interested

It's impossible. They absolutely do not want you running around with your bike. Forget it.

i remember a few years past that these guys offered a toured trip in burma, and just checking on their site they still have it listed.

This is Asian Motorcycle Adventures, run by an American, Reed Resnikoff. I took a great trip with him around the Golden Triangle in 2001 and have kept in touch with him since. His advertised Burma trip is merely to attract interested riders; if he gets enough he will try to get approval from authorities in Myanmar. So far, absolutely out of the question. I am going to Burma in January to tour around(jeeps, etc.) as I completely struck out on renting bikes or finding anyone offering motorcycle tours.

What bikes ARE in Myanmar? I am offerred a job there, as an expate resident what is there to buy?

Can a whitey OWN a vehicle in Myan?

At the moment I LOVE my Thai NSR150RR!

I lived and worked in Burma for a year in 1991, I was there as an aircraft pilot.

You can buy bikes locally, but they are all little ones (50 to 100cc), it was very rare at that time to see a bike bigger than 250cc.

We (the group of guys I lived with) had a little 50cc scooter we used just to get around our neighbourhood - we didn't try to register it to ourselves, we had the houseboy purchase it for us. The police (who are everywhere) kept a pretty close eye on us - they didn't care if we rode around within a mile or two of our house, but they always knew about it if we went any further. As expats, we were very much discouraged from driving cars or LandCruisers ourselves - each vehicle had a driver, and when we wanted to go somewhere, the driver took us there. The only exception was WAY upcountry (far north of Mandalay), where the LandCruiser couldn't go out of the village anyway, in that case, no problems with us driving it in the village.

AFIK about the present situation, the country is simply not encouraging (read: actively discouraging) independent tourism. I don't think it would be a good idea to try and go up against that government. Many others have tried and failed. They have no sense of humour.
