Moscow to Ulaanbaatar in 4x4

Hi all,

A couple of choices, which I am asking for pros and cons.
I feel that this would be a late summer, July/August trip.
In a suitably equipped diesel Land Cruiser.

1/ Moscow, via Novosibirsk, either enter Mongolia at Tsagaannuur, in the far west of Mongolia, then take the southern rout via Arvaikheer to U.B.

or

2/ Moscow, via Novosibirsk, onto Irkutsk, see Lake Baikal, then enter Mongolia at Altanbulag, northern Mongolia, then onto U.B.

So, what is the pros and cons of undergoing the long drive eastwards, in either Russia or Mongolia.

vette

We did Moscow to UB in 2010 entering at Altanbulag using 4x4. Pros are that there is a paved road pretty much from the border at Ulan Ude to UB. Not sure how this fares from the West side of Mongolia. The advantages west side as I understand are the mountain ranges through Russia on entry but we didn't do. We did pretty much the route you are describing taking detours deep into the foot of Siberia (Kyzyl) - very beautiful scenery along the way. We visited Lake Baikal and loved. The considerations I would make is timing and how long your visa is as the drive times shouldn't be under-estimated.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
