Morrocco
 

Planning a trip to Maroc in May 03 and would like some suggestions as to route. Intend to go Portsmouth/Bilbao ferry and ride down to Algeciras - will have about 9-10 days actually in Maroc. Will be travelling on GS's so can do unmade roads /pistes etc although nothing too technical. Any recommendations of places to visit / stay would be greatly appreciated.

There is heaps of very interesting information on Morrocco in previous posts, just do a search using the search engine for that info.

I backpacked through Morrocco a couple of years back and wished I'd gone by bike.
It's a great country and you'll really enjoy your trip. In the meantime, enjoy the planning.

I did exactly the same trip in December, ferry to Bilboa and then down to Algeciras, ferry to Ceuta then 9 days in Morocco and same route back. Me and wife on Tiger.

Hi JFL,

Had a look at your route. I mailed you the document with some remarks.
Think the plan is a bit entousiastic unless you are well equipped and have loads more experience then me. Especially the pistes, are you gonna ride all these alone? I would reconsider if you're not experienced.

I started of for my Marocco trip in the same way. Was my first time and came to grips with reality when I realised what risks I was taking being 'out there' alone with little experience.

I may have been a bit adventurous with the planning- Chris Scott's guides makes the M7 seem do-able for a first timer? But maybe I'll leave the M3 and M4 unless I can find a posse to go with?

Wether a piste is doable or not, besides it generall grade of difficulty, is also decided by weather elements. And thus might change quite quickly.

I should check it, but if the M7 is the one going south from Tinrhir to ... (euh can't remember and not at home) then that one is doable. For us the first part was a mud race due to heavy rain!!!! Normally it should be fine.
An other doable one is the one going over Igherm through the anti atlas. But keep in mind, you'll be in remote area and a stupid fall can have very serious consequenses.

The fact that you are on your own is the tricky part as a first timer. I solved it by hooking with other groups from time to time. Or also a trick is asking the touristy 4x4 convoys where they are heading. If they go the same way you can arrange stuff with them. It makes the thing a lot safer. I did this on the loop along the Tizi N ticha (lots of folks on this track).
You could also consider to head south to Erfoud (and have some fun under way, there are some tracks that you could include). Get to Erfoud and just hook up with a couple of other bikers or 4x4's to head out to Merzouga and play. That shouldn't be a problem.
