morocco to tunisia...is it possible?

myself and a couple of friends are planning to head to morocco in march 2009, we will ferry to morocco from spain but one of our ideas was to go across to tunisia and then ferry to italy on the return leg.
our phone call to the algerian embassy didnt reveal any usful info just a flat 'no'!
has anyone done this?
is the time of year ok?
are we mad?
oh..and we're riding sport(ish) bikes!

thanks.

I'm afraid the flat "no" is it. To get from Morocco to Tunisia along the coast you have to go via Algeria and the Morocco - Algeria border has been closed since 1994. Others may know better but as far as I'm aware this really is a border where closed means closed.

You can get to Tunisia via Algeria from Morocco but it's the long way round - via Mauri, Mali, Niger and that's probably more than you were planning to do.

Hi jafo,

sorry to say that, but - it is not possible. Border is closed, no ferries, and according to my knowledge, motorbiking for individuals is not possible in Algeria.

regards,

Robert

I think your best bet would be to get the ferry back from Nador (Morocco) to Almeria (Spain) which takes about 8 hours (overnight)... and ride up the coast to the find nearest Spainish or French port to take you to Tunisia? - that would be a long crossing though...

thanks for the replies everyone
looks like plenty to do and see in morocco anyway, just don't like going back on the same route, must be some counseling for this problem?

I know what you mean about that not going back the same route. I had been looking at various options and thought it would be great to go Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Scicily. But then I found out about this border problem.

As you say though plenty of routes to pick from in Morocco. Just means you have to do Italy some other time.

I do like the idea of doing it the long way but the time just isn't there for that.

If you are planning on seeing a lot of Morocco (and there is a lot to see), then you can always enter and exit via different ports (as I mentioned above) and see the country in a sort of U shape?

Tanger is the most popular port (on the far north west side), but Nador (north east) is equally accessible from Spain, although the ferry takes a lot longer - at least that way you wouldn't be covering the same ground?
