morocco

hi

can anyone tell how much time the following pistes in morocco can take?

-piste from merzouga to M'hamid (this piste took me two days last year but I only had 5 gps waypoints, so I got lost a lot. is it possible to drive it in one day?);

-piste from M'hamid to Foum Zguid and back to Zagora;

-piste of the todra gorges.

Thanks in advance

have fun!

These pistes are fully described with plenty of GPS points in the Sahara Overland book (http://www.sahara-overland.com/).

Merzouga to Tagounite (near Mhamid) can be done in a long day, but an overnight is recommended. It's 240km long.

The other ones can be done in a day. Mhamid to Foum Zguid is 140km. Alnif to Tinerhir is 64km. The piste inside the gorges (north of Tinerhir) is not in the book. The loop Boulmane Dades - Dades Gorges - Agoudal - Todra Gorges - Tinerhir is 140km long and can be done in one day, except during the rain season, but it's recommended to take more time to admire the landscape. If you are there in the 3rd week of September, don't miss the "Moussem des Fiancées" (meeting of the brides) in Imilchil, about 30km north of Agoudal.

More information about the Dades - Todra loop can be found at http://www.gsclubuk.com/adventures/simonmc/simonmc.htm. A copy of that text is also in the Adventure Motorcycling Handbook in a chapter called... "The Village from Hell". Don't get lost!

Pierresas, tried the link... doesn't seem to work. Maybe mistyped something?

Do have some other questions. I am plannning to go to Marocco from 26/4 till 26/5. I'll be on a Honda Transalp with off road tires. The Transalp itself is already quite heavy. With the extra gear is will almost a tank. (if I had known I would start doing stuf like this I would have bought a dommie...)
I'll have a GPS and an actiraruis of about 450 km. Map and compass is not new to me.
BUT off road is quite new. Can't say that I have already ridden 500k's off road. I do ride 35000k's a year, but meanly on tarmac. I am not afraid of the dirt roads, but sand makes me a bit nervous.

So how experienced should one be before attempting for ex. Merzouga to Tagounite, Todra gorge, Foum-Zguid to Tagounite,... Are there places you would not recommend for a novice? Would you recommend a certain route (with different pistes) that goes from 'easy' to 'hard'?
I'll never be in a hurry, can always take my time,.. Guess that's a plus.

Anyone who is around Marocco in the same period feel free to contact me. Maybe we can meet up somewhere.

Good riding to all!

The period at the end of my sentence was wrongly counted as part of the URL. Click here and it should be fine: http://www.gsclubuk.com/adventures/simonmc/simonmc.htm

I have no off-road experience with a Transalp. Some people get through with a GS or an Africa-Twin so I guess it is possible with a Transalp and good tires. I prefer to let folks more familiar with these pistes answer your question. If you get no responses, a possibility for you is to head south of Erfoud on the road that turns into a piste and goes to the auberges on the edge of the dunes of Merzouga. There is some sections with sand there, just before reaching the dunes. If you get stuck, you won't be very far from civilization and then you'll know that you better stick to the pistes with a hard surface (ie. avoid Merzouga - Mhamid).

See http://www.kitmax.com/kitmax/kit12tr...04_morocco.htm for an account on this latest piste (but note that Kitmax was there in November after some storms and the piste was in a terrible condition).
