Michigan Upper Peninsula

Hi - I'm a new comer to the forum.

My wife and I are visiting the UP of Michigan in the beginning of September. We're going to do some hiking at the Porcupine Mountains and visit Sault Ste. Marie.

Where else should we go?

Copper Country - a.k.a. Keewenau Penninsula - sticks up into Lake Superior although in September snow can happen. Make sure you do some pasties :thumbup1: (its a food thing), try them at the Finlandia in Hancock (just follow the highway across the bridge through Hancock).

I second the Keewenaw. If you are into hiking the Porkies, you might be interested in bike and kayak rentals in Copper Harbor. Ride , moto or pedal, to the top of Brockway Mountain (hill by Rockie Mt. standards) for a stunning view. No trip to the UP is complete without a stop in the town of Gay for a photo op at, yes, The Gay Bar.

Thanks for the suggestions- we'll be heading up there -- j

Great area!

+1 on Coppor Harbor. There are old coppor mines to tour, as well as a very cool ride for ~15 miles going into the city of Coppor Harbor.
Other cool riding is west of the Keewenaw Penn., Lake in the Clouds is a pretty cool tourist spot, although there is hardly ever many people there. Also, I cannot remember the city name, but the worlds largest ski flying jump is in that area. Most of the roads are nicely paved and often quite curvy.

While you're there, remember that Houghton is a college town, so check out some of the local pubs.

I did that trip on an FJ1200 five years ago and enjoyed it immensly. Enjoy yourselves and if you make it to the Detroit area, you can stay at my house. My garage has room for bikes and it is of course stocked with tools and supplies!

Grand Marais, and Pictured Rocks

Well this maybe too late, or maybe you can access it if your still on the road, but Grand Marias and the Pictured Rock shore line of Lake Superior are musts. There are ferry tours of them, several very good campgrounds right on the National Lake Shore. Its a great backpacking hike for an overnighter or a day or two. An 11 mile hike that goes right along the shore.
Their just east of Munising and Marquette in Central North U.P.
Hope you get to see them, Lake Superior is unlike any lake in the world that I know of. Its all great up there, and no crowds, you'll feel your in another country compared to back east.....
