Unmissable roads Central/South America?

I've got 5 months to ride through Central and South America.

Whilst I love opening the map and plotting a route that day and seeing where I end up, I'd appreciate some advice too!

So, any tips for epic roads and awe inspiring scenery where it might be?! I'm up for crossing mountains, diving into valleys, crossing desserts etc. Provided my KLR650 can handle it, I'll be happy!

Oh and a bed and at the end of the day helps too!

Cheers!

A few of my fave rides....

Hey, have a grand time! I just finished 7 months, 30,000kms from Colombia to Ushuaia and enjoyed just about every inch of it. I tend to like dirt more than pavement and here are some of the unpaved routes I loved the best.

1. Northern Peru: #3 Olmos to Pedro Ruiz Gallo; Gocta waterfalls, Chachapoyas, Celendin, Cajamarca. Perhaps my most favourite.

2. Central Peru: Santa/Chimbote, Canyon del Pato, Huaraz, Huascaran National Park, Huanaco, Pampas... can keep going south to Cusco if you want.

3. Bolivia (fewer people do this route b/c they go via salt flats... but it was beautiful/lots of river crossings/watch out for the farm animals! and I enjoyed it): Sucre, Monteaguo, Entre Rios, Tarija

4. Northern Argentina: northern ruta 40, Susques, San Antonio de los Cobres, Cachi, Cafayete

5. Southern chile: Caraterra Austral

One of the best rides I've ever done is cross the Bolivian Altiplano National Park. You will need to have dirt riding skills. But the colours are super vivid.

Volcano llaima

South ofsantiago and just north of Pucon is a volcano as named above. An amazing dirt goes around this which erupted in 2008 and scarred sond of the land. It brings you down to near Pucon. Forests lakes small walks camping and a smouldering volcano to top it

The thing is... I wouldnever have seen this road without my gps and osm maps

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
