Mexico, Copper Canyon. Info on road
 

I'm planning my 2 up full loaded GS trip to Copper Canyon that will happen in couple more weeks.
I will be going down on Baja to La Paz, cross to Los Mochis and from there get the Hwy 15 north towards Ciudade Obregon.
But few miles before Obregon there is this little town named Fundicao and from there there is a road East towards Batocosa, Quinego, then North to Cedros and finally gets to the original road in Rosario.
I wonder if that road is paved or not. Have you ever rode it? Can you tell the road conditions there?
Would be that a time saving instead going to Obregon then East to Rosario?

Hi again strsout. The route you describe will not offer a time saving over the route via Cd.Obregon. The road is a secondary farm service road , I did not see it paved two years ago ,probably is still gravel . The scenery will be nice but expect slow going to Rosario ( a motel there)My QUIMERA atlas shows it as stil unpaved or partially paved.
Just curious, but are you using a map from Brazil in your planning ? I ask because you ar e using Portugese spellings for several of the place names which can be confusing you.

Thank you for the info on the road. On that first day I'm looking for time instead of scenary... I want to get from Los Mochis to Basaseachic if it's possible, so the fast would be the better.


I'm using Garmin MapSource World Map Version 4 and a 5 years old AAA map but as soon as I get to Tecate I will buy the QUIMERA or GUIA ROJI that you told me about, so during the ferry from La Paz to Los Mochis I will have time to study better.

Using MapSource I got about 320 miles from Los Mochis to Basaseachic and in another forum, a guy told me that it can be done in one long day, before dark.

Thank you for all your ideas. I took note of all and I'm sure they are making my trip better. Actually, just to let you know, after reading your comments on the other thread, my wife agree to cancel ALL those expensive hotels and we are going to find something there as we arrive. :) :)

AAwww , shucks, now you're making me feel guilty for posibly getting you in trouble with the wife.
Yes Los Mochis to Basaseachic is possible if you ride hard it is still going to be over 500km and nip and tuck to do it all i n the 11 hours or so of daylight in October. This past winter the ferry docked in Topolobampo at 8pm so it will be night for the 25km run to Los Mochis. There is a new very nice hotel, the only one !, in Topo, stayed there for $35 for two bedsTV. It is called Hotel Marina, from ferry terminal go about 400m then turn right into town on Calle Labastida Ochoa, to corner of Av K.Owen, can't miss. The restaurant was still under construction, may be open now , otherwise food is available at taquerias.
If yo decide to carry on to Los Mochis for the night look up Hotel Monte Carlo in city center on Angel Flores at corner of Independencia, two blocks south of the southeast corner of t he plaza.The parking area is enterd via the narrow street/alley of Flores. Two people for $30 or less , restaurants aplenty nearby.Like all hotels there will be a choice of rooms in a range of prices so don't be shy about asking if they have anything more economical.
If you get up real early you can eat when still dark and be on the road early. If you make it as far as Baseachic stop at the Posada Cahuizori , actually in hamlet Cahuisori about 4km west of Basaseachic on north side of Mex 16 facing the only PEMEX gas station in Basaseachic area. Rustic clean cabin ,parking out front and small restaurant , less than $24 for two. In Basaseachic village there are also several hotels and eateries .If you want to splurge then go through Basaseachic on Mex 16 and turn off south onto the road directing to San Juanito which is paved for a km or 2 and then turn off into the National Park Saltos de Basaseachic , follow park road 5km to near end and find Rancho San Lorenzo Resort wher e a cabin starts at $55 , restaurant on site, and the spectacular full on view point of the tall Bas. waterfall is only a few hundred meters farther down that road. From the north rim out of Bas. village the falls are only seen as they drop over the edge.
If you get to Yecora later than 4pm think about stopping there earlier hotels noted are good and not bank breakers.
