mc papers for Sudan
Hi there,

I'll go to Sudan with my motor cycle. What special papers do I need for my bike? E.g. insurance, carnet, ..?

Krid, bad news I'm afraid

You can't get in at all. The border is closed, and attempts to get visas have failed.

At the moment the only known definite way across Sudan is by air from Cairo to Ethiopia or Nairobi. See our account at www.horizonsunlimited.com/Egypt.htm

Also see Chris Brights story - he tried for months just to get a visa, and was unsuccessful - at www.horizonsunlimited.com/chrisbright

There is a story of two Germans who crossed Saudi Arabia, but this appears to be a one-off.

Do let us know if you get any other information, lots of people would like to cross Sudan.

Hi,

actually, some did it just recently! Check out
this link,
they crossed Sudan by a Land Rover. The ferry from Aswan to Wadi halfa goes
again! For those of you who can read German, check out the pages of
Klaus Daerr, he tells us that the
ferry costs about 140 D-Marks for one person and a motorbike.

I'll keep you updated about my investigations, you may also check out

I travelled overland by vehicle through Sudan earlier this year and had no problems.

He caught the boat in Aswan Egypt to Wadi Haifa then the train to Athara, Sudan. His visa issued in three days in Norway. It appears the border south is open as he rode to Kartoum and Gedaref then part rode part trucked over the border to Gonder, Ethiopia, and rode to Addis Adaba. "

Changes everyday! I think the best bet is to just show up at the border and try, perhaps even getting a visa at the border if you can't get one in advance.

this is cool news! I already read on the BBC news that the border Sudan-Ethiopia will open officially even for the natives! The border Sudan-Eritrea reopened already.

I just got my visum yesterday. I'll report how everything goes from underway!

Hi Krid,

Looks like you're getting some good current feedback on your Sudan plans. I traveled around the world by motorscooter, going through the Sudan in 1987. My info is stale, but may provide some reference points.

It was fairly easy getting into the Sudan. A carnet was needed. Insurance? Non-existant when I was there.

I got a visa in two days at the Sudanese Embassy in Cairo, rode to the ferry port south of Aswan, rode from the port in the Sudan to the new Wadi Halfa (the original was drowned by Lake Nasser) I just had to fill out some forms - one promising that I would re-export my scooter. I took it to Khartoum. I had to fly from Khartoum to get to Kenya and bypass the civil war in the south. Some bikers I met in Khartoum went in convoy through the "Central African Loop" to get around the south. (One guy actually hitchiked through the south - and got shot in the leg on his way out!)

How are you planning to leave the Sudan?

Hi Tom,

thanks for your wishes! My journey starts on Thursday, I hope to make some photos for the net before, but I guess it's too late already.

My plans for Sudan are to go into Ethiopia at the border between Gedaref and Gonder! It's open again officially after the two foreign ministers met in Metemma (I believe), so no problem there.
