Mauritania Routes - Horizons Unlimited

Greetings from Dakar,
I am about to set out on a journey across Mauritania and up into Morocco. I have many different route plans, but my safety routes consist of going from Nouachott up to Atar and then from Atar north to Choum. My question is: what are the conditions of the roads in terms of finding my way. I will not be carrying a GPS nor suitable detailed maps. So if there is a possiblility that these roads curve and weave and split into a thousand directions, I need to reconsider.

I'm in Gambia right now and heard this morning from another traveller that Nouackchott to Atar was sealed all the way with new-ish tarmac. As for Atar to Choum I don't know, but isn't there a rough track to the South of the railway line from Choum to Nouadhibou? Or you can take the train itself.
Can't you get IGN maps for Mauritania in Dakar?

Good luck with your journey - what vehicle are you using?
I'm going from the UK to Senegal in November - there's some good advice re. routes in response to my posting 'UK to Senegal in an Astra 1.3 petrol'.
