Map images to draw the route on...

Does anyone know a good way to draw a reasonably accurate version of a route on a world map for a RTW trip in electronic format? What would be a good source for the map?

Thanks!

I'm presently on the road and use Adobe Illustrator to draw a red line and cross-hair type marker on a simple GIF map for a high-level idea of where I've travelled. And then for a more detailed view I draw the same ontop of a screenshot (another GIF file) from my mapping software (Fugawi). Take a look at my website and click on the Central American section and then click again on the map.

Cheers

PS. I'm also using tracks from my GPS to create a Google Earth file which people can download and see where I've travelled each day.

These may be more than you are looking for and somewhat expensive but you will get an entire world map in Adobe Illustrator editable format.

http://www.mapresources.com/worldmaps.asp

There are lots of maps on the web, however, for free (subject to copyright, of course, in many cases) and with Illustrator you can place .jpgs as backgrounds and then place your vector lines on them, to create your route.

Hope this helps.

Thumbs up Lots of maps on the internet...

Check out the map I used on our website: www.ekke-audrey.ca. Just click on "Longitudinal Way Round" and there is the map. Pulled it from the internet (the original size is enormous) and then drew the lines on with a simple Paint or Photo editing program (can't remember which).

If you click on the Europe trip you'll see maps I made while on the road from the Touratech QV software I used for navigation. I just pulled the bitmap from the map and then added text and lines with a photo editing program.

Since you're in the Calgary area maybe we should hook up some time!

wow, that's great everyone. Thanks for your help!

Ekke, I'd love to get together when you're in Calgary sometime. Looks like you've already had some great adventures! I'll fire you a PM with my contact info.

Here's what the map looks like now... I used the 2006 version of Ekke's map that I found on the Internet.
This is an extremely low res version. I have a much clearer pdf as well in a number of sizes.
