Los Angeles to Rio this July, route suggestions needed
 

I am traveling on motorcycle BMW 1150GS, in late June early July.
I would like some suggestions for the route especially how to get from Panama to Rio. If you have done this trip and live within 500 miles of me perhaps we can meet up and discuss the route you took as well, I will buy the beer. This is my first major trip. I just graduated college and this is my reward to myself.

I would like to take a boat down the Amazon and ride the rest of the way to Rio.

There´s 3 feasible routes you can try

1 - Panama to Venezuela, from Venezuela to Manaus (using BR-174), take a boat to Belem and from there ride to Rio. Pros: Amazon Jungle Cons:Amazon Jungle (not kidding). You should avoid this route if you plan to take the BR-174 between rain season months in Brazil (It´s the rain season in the area). Virtually impossible to ride the road in many parts during rain season.

2- Panama to Colombia until you reach Peru, take the interoceanic road and ride on a good asphalt road in most of the way. Pros: You still can see a little of the Amazon Jungle and will be able to ride on the Brazilian "savannas" (know as Cerrado). You can also visit Brasilia using this route. In Peru you can visit Cuzco too and Machu Picchu is not far away either. Con: HEAVY truck traffic, specially between Cuiaba and Santos on the soybean crop season on summer.

3 - Going south until reach Chile, riding through northern Argentina and entering Brazil on Foz do Iguaçu. Pros: A nice route, very scenic in most of the way. Cons. A lot longer route, and you can have problems between Peru and Chile deepening on the police officer´s mood. :thumbdown:
