I am aware you need a guide but beyond that i was not expecting any issue.
It's simply a monetary issue (and not just a current one - it's a ~permament~ policy) and having to have a fixed itinerary - guides don't come cheap. The other side of having a guide is that you can't go wherver you feel like it on a whim.

If you want to do it cheaply, and go just about anywhere you want, the best bet is to buy a local Chinese bike in China.

Hey Pecha, yep realise its pretty tight...we'll miss a lot, would love to have more time off but thats the max that my life will allow for at the moment, thought you never know until you go lol...anyhow thanks for all the info, we're slowly preparing now and we'll launch the blog site soon...

As part of several options, I am in the process of contacting various travel agencies in China regarding the dreaded guide. I have submitted three very rough itineraries for the route:

1. Torugart - Kashgar - Route 219 to Lhasa - Kunming - Jinghong - Mohan.

2. Torugart - Kashgar - Hetian (southern Taklamakan route) - Dunhuang - Golmud - Chengdu - Kunming - Jinghong - Mohan.

3. Torugart - Kashgar - Tashkurgan - Khunjerab Pass.

The first two would be up to 30 days, the last about 6 days. All, of course, depending on price. So the question is: anyone heading that way next year September(ish) who would be interested in hooking up to share the cost? (Not got any figures yet, all a bit hypothetical at this stage!)
As China is the most problematic country on my route (I think?!?), I am looking to build my London to KL trip around China. Any other suggestions of Chinese travel agencies I could contact would be welcome (so far in communication with NAVO, SINOTOUR, PTA and another who's name escapes me for the moment). Cheers.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events (22 this year!); we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, the HUBB or to receive the e-zine. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
