London Cape town

Just looking into doing a trip to Cape Town, The East side of Africa seems out of my reach due to the crazy cost of the Egyptian Carnet. The West side however seems more reasonable, infact is a Carnet even needed? and how much should I budget for a 3 1/2 month trip all inc?

Thanks in advance

not sure how much to budget for ask me again in 4 months all i can say is that I am heading down from the Canaries into Morocco and down the west coast but only as far as namibia and trying to do that in 3 months. I would love to spend longer on the road but can't as i can't get the time off work :(
Even that trip sees me spending 5 hours on the road each day and that doesn't take into account any break downs, delays etc. Naturally I am not rushing through and once on the way at least want to stop to see places but I reckon it is going to be difficult to see all.

Fuel and visas are the costs at the top of the list, living should be cheap

Cape Town to the North

We are trying to find the best route from Cape Town to Cape North. It's quite easy to go from here, were we live, to Ethiopia. But how to cross Sudan and Egypt? An option is to send the car from Port Sudan to Jordania, but we didn't find a way to do it. The taxes in Egypt are crazy, but travelling North through the Western Africa is not really an option, it is REALLY very dangerous. Does anybody have a good idea?

Well, after reading so much about the dangers of the west Africa route, it has completly took the wind out of my sails, and put me off.

If I was to go, I would most certainly go Italy, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Kenya, then take your choice.

Sure the carnet for Egypt is not cheap, but you will get 80% 0f the carnet price back, when you hand it back in again to the originator.

Also, there are so many damn countries going the west route, you would be for ever be buying visas, East coast, is about 8 countries max.

No way on earth would I go the West route.

Went down the West in 6 months and spent around 1000 Euro a month including fuel, accomodation, repairs and visas (visas were around €1500 in total). I lived simply, took basic rooms, you can save if you bush camp as often as you can.
