Latest Time To Reach Tierra Del Fuego Without Freezing
 

Hey everyone,

I am on my way to TDF and originally I had planned on trying to get there before the end of February, since the temperatures seemed to plumit after that.

My pace of travel has been slower than anticipated (for the better), so I think I will be later that anticipated.

Any advice on how cold it gets when, and when would be the absolute latest time I could possibly go?

I am riding a KLR650, Aerostich suit, with heated jacket, and grip warmers. I can stay pretty warm in cold temps, I just worry about snow, ice, etc.

Checking the weather history for Ushuaia on Wunderground, I see average highs in lower 50s F, and average lows in upper 30s F in mid March.

Kinda like riding to Alaska in early Sept. I've done it, pretty chilly though.
You should be fine in early March. I think I'll head to Ushuaia in January though. Maybe see you down there somewhere.

You can ride down there quite late, the cooler temps do make it less enjoyable though, but you are well prepared with the heated jacket and grips.

Biggest concern about snow would be crossing the Paso Garibaldi into Ushuaia. You'll be early enough in the year that snow would be intermitent at worst and the road is well maintained so even if it did happen to snow, you could wait a couple of days and it would be plowed/sanded/or melted.

In short, it'll be fine in late summer/early fall conditions. Cool nights and shorter days mean that you start later to let it warm up a bit and try to hit the next town early. Any early snow you can wait out if you have the time. Most potentially icy conditions can be avoided by waiting for the sun to come out and the day to heat up. Have fun:)

So when it the absolute latest you can ride there then?

I am not sure but I am just going for it. I will be there in about two weeks I think. I am about 5 days north of Santiago in Chile right now. Going to stick to main roads.
