Exclamation Laos closing borders to bikes

Hi,

The bureauprats strike again, I just read this post on GT Rider:

The Golden Triangle Rider :: Border Closures to Motorcycles - All of Laos?

Looks like another SE Asian country falls off the travel map. This also would mean, that no matter how much money you paid to the Chinese it would no longer be possible to travel overland between W and E Asia.

It remains to be seen whether this will actually be enforced.

I know this is an old post but just in case anyone reads it and gets the wrong idea I thought I’d post an update. The borders between Laos and Thailand are open absolutely no problems crossing including the friendship bridge, and a very easy border.

If you follow the single-tracks near the borders - you dont see a custom.

And the police is relaxed, no roadsblocks or so. On our Laos trip we leave Laos and drove into China - we recognize it late - after 20mins...

But it was no problem to come back

The borders between Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos are all open to bikes just not ones bigger then 175cc or so. There are 250's riding around. I crossed between all 3 countries in 2011 and 2012. Safe, friendly and never a problem..Great riding !

Except for Vietnam, the other borders are open to big bikes, not 175cc or lower.

According to this on GT-Rider you can get into VN if you get a permit in advance. You can NOT simply turn up at the border.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
