Lagos - Europe - Lagos

Am planning a trip from Lagos, Nigeria to Europe and back.

My trip will take me through the following countries; Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania/Senegal, Western Sahara, Morocco, Spain, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Ferry to Morocco Or Ride back to Spain and make return trip passing through the north of Ghana and then back to Lagos.

I have a choice of 2 bikes....my VFR1200FDA or the BMW R1200GS. Right now the argument weighs strongly for the GS but anything can happen

I have ridden to Senegal before and am quite familiar with the route...however, there is some degree of "uncertainty" concerning Mali as there was a coup there a couple of months back.....we will see.

I welcome suggestions on exact routing in Europe and suggested stops. Also if anyone is anywhere along my route, it would be a great time to meet and perhaps ride part of the route together?

My departure date if 14th of July and I expect to be in Morocco around the 22nd. I plan my whole trip to take me 4 to 6 weeks.

Any suggestions/advice is most welcome.

Looking forward to your inputs as we develop my route

Been there, done that!

Will be posting my report shortly.

A lot of misinformation here! My experience showed me that a lot of the info is from "hear say" and a lack of an understanding of the real situations "on the ground".

Most interesting are all the stories about the Rosso border between Mauritania and Senegal! One of the easiest borders to pass in West Africa!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
