kashmir area?!?!
 

hi all

the plan, nepal - india - kashmir area - china - tajikistan, sounds simple enough, but the whole kashmir area is much a headake as china, all ive been able to find out is that india and pakistan have been fighting over it for longer that ive been alive, sum maps say india owns it but the top bit is controlled by pakistan outhers its all pakistan's or india's and sum just make it a red zone with a big question mark in it??
so as you can gess any and all info will help weather you need a pakistan visa, is it safe to ride in that area as pakistan isnt the number one tourist spot at the moment for obvieous reasons, the karakoram highway is sounding a safe bet its just getting to it from northen india? ive also put this message in the southern asia forum, cheers all

Kashmir the Jewel in the Crown
 

We spent 3 months in Kashmir this last year and highly recomend it.
Part of it is in Pakistan and part in India thou you cant travel across it.
The only foreigner border is at amritsar and then do the beautifull; trip thru Leh. The Paki side is tough travelling and the roads are poor , even washed out in the monsoon.Trouble??! its all relative.. id say youre more likely to fall off your bike than be blown off it....Its proper adventure and after Tajikistan its a real breeze but doont mis the Pamir highway and Wakhan corridor...words aint enough.
Put TNTGOEAST into a google search and have a look at our blog....more info...just ask...but please doooo itt!!!

thanks for that mate read the blog and looked great, and meeting the two guys on the bikes means the it can be done, just wondering did you need a pakistan vias for northen kashmir and if so was it hard to get? and what was your route/border crossings from tajikistan - afghanistan - pakistan, if i can use the karakoram highway to cross in to china, the way you went may be the one, cheers

Got to admit this was my biggest worry before we left home. They all veriable... for a cursry glance to attempted extortion. Only russian i needed was Yani Pani Myo "i dont understand" they leave you alone eventually.
Crossed from Taj to Afghan at the Panj river but yoyu can croos at Ishkashim on the Pamir Highway which is what i would do if i went again and travel up the Wakhan corridor...some road then horseback...fantastic.
Afghan into Paki at the Kyber Pass..not to be missed IMHO. You can make Taj border to kabul in one long day we did 2 days and then find out if the roads are trouble to Kyber ask any NGO lots about.
Didnt need special permissions for Kashmir in Pakistan nor the Indian side you might need a permit if you want to go into Nubra Valley from Leh but easy got in Leh 100 rups
