Iran and Turkmenistan

Salut * tous,

I have three questions

1_Does anybody knows something about a ferry from Astrakhan to Turkmenbashi ?
2_Is it possible to pass a boarder between Turkmenistan and Iran ?
3_Is it really impossible to enter Iran without a carnet de passage en douane?

Thankyou for your answers

Guillaume

2 out of 3!

dont know for the 1st question...but 2nd.. - the border between turkmenistan and Iran is fine. no probs. very organised -especially on the iranian side.
3rd - it is NOT possible to enter Iran without a carnet.
if you want to have a read of our fairly recent journey in these areas have a look here:

Hi Guillaume,

1) The ferry exists and it's working. Departure is not scheduled but there is one boat each week. Deparure from Baku to Turkmenbashi is also not scheduled but one boat normally leave Baku each day. You have to know also that the boat can be leave the port, but it's not easy to know how much time you have to spend waiting in the front of the port of Turkmenbashi. ( one or two days is normal ).

2) yes. No problem.
3) No. It's impossible to enter Iran without carnet.

You CAN enter Iran without a carnet. You need to pay for some customs paperwork at the border, the costs vary greatly from $50 to $500 for a car. I know people who have done this at Bazargan (Turkey), Mirjaveh (Pakistan) and Bandar Abbas (Persian Gulf Port) WITHOUT a carnet. If you are entering from Turkey it's definitely possible.
