Indonesia to Australia
 

Hai,

My plan is (or maybe was) to travel trough Indonesia, folow the islands upto Timor (Kupang) and there fly to Darwin (Australia). I heared somewhere this could be done for around $150.
But... last week I saw a trip-report from some one who was not able to get to Timor at all and had to fly out from Bali (Which is very very expensive).

Of course I could fly from Singapore to Sidney, wich is cheap.... but I would miss Indonesia... And it's suposed to be so beautifull.

Does anyone have any info on this subject?

Hi, are you flying by your self or shipping a bike also, I flew from Bali to Perth and thought it was very cheap, lots of Ozzies go on package holidays to Bali so there are loads of flights and not always full, I got my tickets from BSA tours and travel in Ubud, can't remember the actual cost but I'm a real tight wad and hate spending money so if my memory recalls it as cheap then it was. I'll look up in my journal if I can find it and check on the price. Regards Chris

I checked the prices for flying from Bali and they are not at all nice... And... I just want to see all the islands, so flying out from Timor would be the best.

I don't recall the exact price, but it was at least twice as much as flying from Jakarta. Flying from Singapore is even cheaper.
Also flying to Darwin is more expensive then flying to Sidney. Probably be caurse there are more flights that way?

Strange as it may seem, I just want to fly from Indonesia to Darwin. One of my "goals" is traveling as few as possible distance in the air. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif

Do you need to fly? I am in the early stages of planing the reverse of your trip, going from Darwin to Indonesia. Although I have not looked into it yet I always imagined it would be fairly easy to ship me and the bike by boat, or just hitch a ride with a boat at the docks, for that stretch. Afterall the distance is not far. 'could certainly be more fun than flying...

This route is proving to be a problem. Lest not trying to find a ferry from Malaysia to Sumatra first. The ferries are passenger jobs only, no vehicles - from any port in Malaysia. Bloody staggering fact.

Secondly I've enquired about flights from Timor. 'Merpati.co.id' Indonesia airline no longer does Kupang - Darwin. 'airnorth.com.au' does do flights from Dili to Darwin. They use TNT for their freight. I won't scare myself by getting a quote from them.
And the ferry service remains a fantasy.....

Hi! After reading the posts here, I hop over to Google and keyed in: "Kupang Dili Darwin Boat Flight." No commas, no "to," no "or." And whaddaya know! A lot of sites and info which appear to be "direct hits" to the questions and doubts raised here.

Try them for yourselves!

Unfortunatly most of those links have the words "bloody, killed, attack, victim, etc..." in them. I even found one "Timur, no flights out to darwin"

Not very helpfull.

Stop trying to get a one way air ticket.
We did it , after our bikes left by sea from Darwin to Singapore, by purchasing a 7 day package tour to Bali. I have not been on the funny tablets but it really is way way way cheaper to purchase a package of airfares with 5 to 7 nights in an okay hotel than it is to purchase a one way ticket. We then went overland by public transport to Jakarta and bought a real cheap air fare to Singapore. Or you could get a ferry to Singapore. Got there in plenty of time to collect the bikes.
we threw out the return air ticket to darwin. Perhaps if you want to go from Indonesia to Darwin you could still buy the package from a darwin based travel agent via the internet and just use the return fare.
Bonus day tour and a free Bungy Jump came with the package. Only used the day tour. There is a limit to what we will do. . .

O.K. The Indo islands to East Timor & then to Darwin can be done - and very easily. I've just bounced from Sumatra down to East Timor.
Thanks to Kirsten I found out about Perkins shipping who do a weekly dili - darwin boat. I've just put a posting on the shipping page with details.
Airnorth do a twice daily dili-darwin flight for USD216.00 one way! Maybe you can get it cheaper if booked at least two weeks in advance. I'm not that organised.

guys just a bit of help if you can im doing a trip witout cycle this time and was wondering what transport is available between Dili and Kupang ive found out about a boat that travels from darwin to kupang but i wanna see dili and whats in between dili and kupang any help greatly apreciated also this is a trip planned for this time next year

Heard about another option for getting to Aus (alas too late for us to use). There is an Aussie called Warren Goulding that is doing a freight run in a steel hulled yacht from Kupang to Darwin! He has apparently taken another bike (BMW 1100 with side car) before. So you could have a nice sailing trip along with your bikes and save yourselves the airfares.

We didn’t manage to track him down but think his Aus ph is 0061 88 9815551 & mobile 04 38633249.

The other way to get in touch with him is via Edwin Lerrick, the guy that runs L’Avalon bar in Kupang. He has put several other travellers in touch with Warren.
