India, Anyone know if the road from Kinnaur through Spiti is open?

Hi Everyone,

I'm currently in India and am considering the Manali to Leh route on my 2004 Royal Enfield Bullet 350 Electra. As a warm up I'd like to do Simla, Kinaur, Spiti, then over the Kunzum La and down into Manali. I did this trip on the bus 7 years ago and really want to do it on the Bullet, however, I read in the Lonely Plannet that the road at Malling is broken and that the busses stop either side as it's impassable.

Anyone got any info? I don't suspect that anyone here in Delhi is gonna know!

I'll see if I can hook up with anyone here in Delhi and if I get any info I'll update this post!

I know for sure that this is gonna be a great ride as this route runs past some big mountains and the scenery changes from green valleys to the arid landscape of the Tibetan Plateau.

Thanks in advance, safe ridin,

Cheers,

Greg

your best option would be to check with himachal road transport bus drivers or the BRO

Fresh news

Check at xbhp.com

Some guys are riding in a group thereabouts, trip should get over tomorrow, after which you'll get an extremely accurate idea as to the route.

Nice one guys

Thanks for the advice there.

Met a group of Ladakhi's who are making the same trip and they recon the road is open so it all looks good to me!

I should of asked in my post about the availability of petrol! The Ladakhi chaps recon there's nothing between Rampur and Kazza, anyone else got any ideas on this?

Cheers,

Greg (Happily leaving Delhi tmrw!!!)

Hey all this is my first post on here

I saw that vid a while ago. I'm not easily phased by traffic situtions on a bike but that really does look truly insane. Maybe it might be more managable from ground level but i suspect it would still be as crazy.

I'm 23 and am looking at riding from the UK to India some time next year.

Not sure how which route would be possible really. Iran looks like the safest, but there's that whole thing about visa's.

China is well out of my budget.

Maybe I could ride through Afghanistan, REALLY REALLY fast?

Petrol availability

Gidday Greg
I did this route several years ago - brilliant ride.
petrol available at Rampur, Jeori, Kalpa & Kaza
Kaza to Manali was a 2 day ride - quite rough, high & remote. only about 200km but needed to buy extra gas at a PWD camp - safer to carry some spare.
