Hows Iceland Sound? in the summer, i mean

Ive been dreaming of driving around Iceland. Id like to ship my bike there... does anyone know anyone whos gone there? or shipped their machine there? Im hoping to circumnavingate the island... If anyones interested in coming, I think Ive got a few or 3 people here talked into it for the summer following this one. Maybe this one, if i could find out something about it. Thanks A Lot

Where are you shipping from?

Good Point. I'm in New York, but from anywhere East Coast USA or Canada to there. Includes Chicago, Washington, Labrador, whatever.

Hi Jason,

the weather can be rough at times - strong wind, rain, but the landscape is great.

You shouldn't only circumnavigate Iceland. Try at least the Kjolur route n/s through central Iceland or to Landmannalaugar hot springs. North western area (Isafjoerdur) is also wild.

On trails through central IL you will have to ford a couple of rivers. Be careful not to drown your bike... ;-)

Regards
Hans

thnks.. good news so far. big rivers.... hmmph. how deep? one meter? two?!! are they....marked or labeled? anybody have any luck with any specific maps? the info on getting my bike there is still digesting. It seems like it may be easier (and a little more fun) to get the machine to Europe and then to Iceland. Im assuming the best three months to go are june/july/august?

Seems I've cleared my reply from yesterday instead of submitting it...

According to statistics best time is August. I started end of July but the trail from Landmannalaugar eastward (F 22) was still closed due to snow. Did it later, should be no probs for your GS. Lot of small rivers to ford.
Best road map I got on IL in Reykjavik. Ringroad ist +/- 50% gravel and tarmac + bridges. Trails thru central IL mostly no bridges, the deepest I came across was knee deep. Sprengisandur Track (F 28) I didn't do. Here deep fords are best done in the mornings when water level is lowest (glacier rivers). If unsure wade through before driving. Kjoelur Track (F 37) is no problem for the GS.
Try Kaldidalur Trail (F 35) west of Gullfoss. Very rewarding.

Ferry from Denmark takes 4 (or 5?) days with stopover at Faroer Islands. Book early for main season.

Enjoy

Hans

Iceland is a blast and as easy as (the ring road away). Good roads (both the sealed and gravel ones anyway, as compared to Australian standards) Ring Road (No 1) only has a few hours of very well maintained gravel. Was to early in the year (may) for the interior to be open so no idea on minor roads across the country). Stop over on the Fareo Islands are well worth it. Small place but one of the most beauitful on the planet. Well worth the effert to get to
