How is motorcycling in Korea possible

Is there any way of riding a motorcycle in Korea? Renting, bringing in the own one, finding someone who lets you ride his for a reasonable fee? I am just speaking of South Korea....... but it seems difficult, and I don't know the reason behind.

Chris,
thanks a lot for the link. I have already emailed my (electronic) signature, and I informed some of my friends about the signature collecting activities, too.

Does anyone else have information on motorcycle rental in South Korea?

Michael

Takashi Kasori, a well-known (in Japan) adventure motorcyclist/author got special permission to ride Korea in October. But that was only a one-time thing. Kasori, has however, started an online petition to be sent to President Kim. The web site http://www.rurubu.co.jp/info/bike/ in only in Japanese though. I will mail him and ask if they would consider putting up an English version of the petition so the rest of the world can get in on the action. Still time left since he is running it through the end of February. There is no guarantee that he will answer my mail. But I will tryc

Hello Chris,

Then, is true that if I get to Incheon and want to take the Dong Chun ferry in Sokcho, I will have to put my motorcycle in a truck or something like that, because is not possible to ride in Korea?

Greetings.

Michael, don't waste your time in South Korea.
The attractions, or lack of them are not worth the hassle, believe me.

I have been in this place for 6 months, and I am still trying to escape.
A couple of guys bought some 100cc and 125cc scooters and mopeds to use of a weekend.
What a disaster.
I think 2 of them ended in hospital the second time they were out.

Look at the date of that ANCIENT post: 18th December 2000
The situation has changed in the past TEN YEARS.

You can ride.

Chris ... I think we need some sort of warning system ... maybe any post older than 2 years has a grey background instead of the normal background, just to alert people to the fact its old ... this kinda thing seems to happen a lot. I assume as the result of someone digging up an old post in the search feature.

Good idea Colebatch- still, you'd expect people to actually read posts would you not? .... mind you...it's a bit like the 'search' function.... seldom used .....:rolleyes2:
that's my wee rant today- I was owed one!!:blushing: shame on me!

Hmm... You'll have to take that one up with the Boss. :confused1:
I didn't program this thing.:blushing: I guess it is a good thing that some people do use the search feature though. :thumbup1:
I did delete my outdated 10 year old post...:oops2:

Yeah, may be so,

But it's still a crap place, and probably got worse in the ten years.

I still wouldn't bother, even if some one gave me a free bike.

Wouldn't go as far as 'crap' sure its not as exciting as the KKH but still, where is? I'm riding from the UK to Aus having left 1 year ago yesterday :) Being 23 I ran out of money in India so flew to Korea and I'm teaching here to make money before carrying on my trip India to Aus.

Personally I love the country, plenty of things to see, welcoming buddists, temples you can stay in, a fascinating industrious culture struggling with its own booming development and shift to liberal consumerism. The roads are European standard and most of the land is mountainous making the scenery spectacular. The Translap stored in Delhi I've only been cycle touring here but the traffic was reasonably accommodating. Driving standards are less than European but nothing like Iran, Pak or India.

The downfall of course is there is no accessible landmass as crossing the DMZ by bike is 99.99% a no no. Entry and exit by ferry from Japan, China etc all possible and if you make land at Busan (Pusan) I have a bed and underground parking for all overlanders!

Also, I don't know about the rest of you but I have a bunch of friends that work in Korea (all seperately, all teaching English) - so regardless of whether people think it's 'crap' or not I'd still want to go as I'll be within spitting distance of the place!

A lot of people told me Albania was 'crap' but I had a great time.
