From what I hear Roatan off the Caribbean coast is a great spot. I wonder how the roads are to cross Honduras though? I have heard there are a lot of police check points. I will be traveling south from El Salvador this July.

I imagine it will be raining.
Any information would be appreciated.

The stories about Honduran highway checkpoints are mostly true. I rode through there in '03, and they had by far the most military stops of any country in Central America. No big deal though, just show your passport, drivers license, and vehicle permit and on your way again. It can get tedious, but I wouldn't let it stop me from going.

No I never made it to the Bay Islands. I did sit next to a guy on an airplane once who owned a dive shop on Roatan. Sounds like a great place to visit. I did camp out on the Homer spit for a few days once though.

If you are going to the Bay Islands have a look at Utila, its basic, diving and drinking is the order of the day but it is a lot cheaper than Roatan which gets lots of package tourists and I can highly reccomend Troy Budden`s Utila Watersports as a dive shop. Unless things have changed over the last couple of years you will have to leave your moto at La Ceba on the mainland which might be a problem but the backpacker friendly Amsterdam group might be able to help. The border crossing to Copan from Guatamala seems to be the one where you stand the least chance of being ripped off if the experiences of myself and others over the last 3-4 months are anything to go by. Well you've covered one of the prerequisits for being a true Homeroid. There are three. Camp on the spit, work in the fish packing plant and get embarrasingly drunk at the Salty Dawg.

You're the second person I have heard from that says Utila is the place to go. Hopefully it will work out. I understand that the diving on the West End is really fabulous and warm.

So it sounds like I'm just a job on the slime line away from Homeroidness, I've got the other 2 covered. I spent a month in Alaska in '92. My brother worked at Seafoods from Alaska in Sterling for several summers.

I second the previous poster on crossing into Honduras at El Florido, near the Copan ruins. It is a very small crossing and I had no hassles there. The road was paved fairly recently, in '03 my map showed it as being dirt, but it is paved. Copan Ruinas is a neat little town maybe 10 miles inside Honduras, and of course the the ruins of Copan are right there. That is the only Honduras entry border crossing I used, so I don't have anything to compare it to.

Getting into Honduras from El Salvador can be a pig - I crossed at El Poy (I think), and it was slow and corrupt - paid $60 in bribes. The best border crossing is apparently at Copan. I had no problem with the cops or military once inside Honduras, was stopped maybe three times, usual bored soldiers wanting to talk bikes.

Roatan vs Utila - I spent three very happy months on Roatan. Great bars, lively people, cheap diving, and some nice roads to explore. The ferry runs daily from Ceiba to Roatan at 3pm. Utila is quieter but much smaller, and has no real room for riding.

Oh yea, that east-west thing. I guess I have a friend here in Venezuela that told me about the west end. I will have to ask her for more info.
I understand from your entry that you brought your bike on the ferry. Any idea how expensive that was?

last thing i heard of was that the border crossing at Copan is the best one. Although my map shows it gravel everybody says here in Guatemala that it has been paved last year. Drop me an email in a month, then I will tell u exactly how it was.

btw. we had our first wedding anniversary last August camping on the spit, having pizza at that Alaskan Italian couple on the spit. just incredible...

The spit is a fine place to celebrate an aniversary. That is great. I know exactly the pizza place you are talking about. They made the Homer News when they shipped in their pizza oven from New York City. Best pizza in town.

Hi Susan, the road from Guatemala to San Pedro in Honduras is perfectly paved.

We rode thru Baja to Mulege, then back up to Mexicali and then mainland down thru Copper Canyon, Durango, Zacatecas, etc. Is a great trip. Baja is nice, but mainland is great.

Martin I have a couple questions for you. Were you the folks that posted a list of all the hotels you stayed at in Mexico? If so, would you mind telling me where it is on the site. I cannot find it for the life of me.

Also did you go into Mexico city? I would rather avoid it, but am not sure how to go from Zacatecas to Oaxaca. I was thinking of stopping at the Teotihuacan ruins on my way through. Did you folks happen to go there?
