Help with RTW route plan

Hi All

Well my long term partner has given me the nod to go and do my long term dream
so next year 2012 I will do my RTW from UK via Russia thru USA and finally home.

I want to be honest with her and give her a rough timescale, so ive a few questions

1. Does a 6 month timescale sound about right?

2. I know you cant go from Magadan now so whats the best way to leave Russia and head to the states?

So thats it for now, Im sure I'll have tons of more questions :helpsmilie: lol

Cheers

I'm also in Newcastle but don't intend leaving til summer 2013. I want to make my way over to Melbourne, which is a must for me, and then work out how to come back from there. I am taking about a year off work for my trip, but as you're local, I would be really interested in getting together to see your planning, and maybe get some tips and advice.

Hi Deana

No probs in meeting up n having a brew.... the kettles always on the boil at my place !

As for my trip I've done a few European trips but the main thing im trying to get my head around is the shipping.... and the costs. Im lucky cause ive taken early retirement but I still need to give our lass a rough timescale.

Cheers

We might cross path along the way. I will go the opposite way, leaving the US in May of 2012.

As for your questions; six month is doable, IMO. Based on my research, a lot of folks ride to Vladivostok and take a ferry to Korea or Japan and air-freight/sea-freight the bike from there to the US- or Canadian West Coast.

You can also ride to Magadan and take a freighter down to Vladivostok and continue as mentioned before.

Hi T rex

how fars your planning ? do you have any shipping costs yet?

I would love to take a year to do it but I feel its selfish on my behalf! so if I can do it in 6 months give a take a few weeks it would be great.

As for the USA return leg... well I think New York would be my end point and fly out from there.

Cheers

I'm "knee-deep" in my prepwork. Got all my gear set and the bike is almost ready. I will work on shipping in the last quarter of this year.

Last Year, Oisin, a lad from Ireland did the route you are looking for. Here is a link to his ride report What goes around comes around... Dublin to New york - ADVrider His report provides excellent first hand information.

Routes into Russia - are you planning on going in through Ukraine? I can fully reccomend going through the Caucasus (Georgia and Azerbaijan), ferry across the Caspian and then TM, UZ and KZ into Russia. There are more borders and visa requirements but it's very varied and you still get a big chunk of Russia.
It took me about two and half months (maybe three) to get to Novosibirsk in Russia this way and I got to go through a lot of varied terrain that I'd have missed going through Russia directly. I was also taking it a bit easy with some rest time in Greece, TM, AZ and KZ.

Thanks T-rex, Ive read Oisin report and his e book "that I may die roaming" (fab read!)

Thanks Henry, I was planning on the Ukraine route for entry into Russia, then Kaz and Mongolia.

Cheers
