I crossed from Bulgaria in to Greece - great roads and scenery, and a huge improvement on Bulgaria ! Avoid Athens - traffic is an absolute nightmare and it was by far the most dangerous place I rode in during 2 months of being all over Europe.

I got the ferry to Corfu and stayed there for a few days. You can then get a ferry from Corfu direct to Italy. You can get ferries to all the greek islands - I didn't do this, mainly because of time but also cost - it will cost serious money if you do more than a couple of trips.

I also saw the worst bike accident in Greece - they often don't wear helmets and a scooter rider was in a bad way with blood everywhere. I suspect he didn't make it. A warning to us all....

My blog is linked to my profile if you want route details.

I am riding from UK to Greece and Turkey, in 6 days time

I only have 10 days available so the plan is to ride my R1200 RT from the UK to Basel then next day onto Ancona, Italy, just in time for the overnight ferry to Igoumenitsa, Greece. Which means I will be travelling 1,600 miles from UK to Greece in about 48 hours.

Then a more leisurely 2 days ride follow the Aegean coastline East onto Istanbul for a two day stopover.

Then riding South for 2 days via the West coast of Turkey to the historic sites of Troy, Pergamon‎, Ruins of Ephesus and past Izmir to a ferry from Cesme to Chios then an overnight ferry to Athens, after a lightning visit to the Parthenon, North and the ruins of Delphi and the battle site of Thermopylae, then over the Rio-Antirio bridge and onto Patra for the ferry back to Ancona then home.

The trip will include 3 overnight ferries and 2 local ferries, a train under the English channel, 5 different hotels, and about 4,000 miles of road.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
