Good paper maps for South america roads?
 

Hola Hubbers,

Im in santigao and looking to purchase paper maps for south america? Sorry but dont have the money to throw around for GPS systems. I think old school maps would be more fun as well - cant blame the gps when it all goes wrong ha ha.

Any tips and advice would be fantastic.

Get anything on plastic coated paper, I like the Rough Guide series (Maps :: Rough Guides Travel) if you can get them but ordinary paper maps will fall to bits in a short space of time.

Hey, I've got the GeoCenter South America - Southern Region map, includes Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. Not sure what's available in Santiago though, maybe some local HUBBers can point you in the right direction, or otherwise print out some google maps for the uber cheap approach

IMHO the best map for Chile is the "Turistel" edited by Telefonica CTC Chile. Lots of additional information. Includes even very small side roads, camp sites (thin edition).

Also comes out in a fat edition which additionally offers information on surrounding areas, tourist offices etc. Sometimes you're lucky to find an english version (rare).

I found South America REALLY well signposted. I barely looked at my GPS or maps.

Agreed, but you should at least have a rough idea whereabouts the next signposted town is situated :cool4: Compared to Europe there are so few roads in South America that you don't really need a GPS. Paper maps are quite sufficient.

Can i get decent maps form the tourist info places? Or does anyone recommend any stores in santiago - large book shops that might sell them?
