Good non-commercial camp site in N. France

Anybody know of one, I'm tinking of doing a weekend trip over at the end of August, and am not sure about french laws with regarding tent pitching, so thought I'd ask if anyone knows of a good site, preferably somwhere close to the Coast.
I don't have a route planned as such, but I only a few days, so it won't be into deepest West France.
Thanks

If you stay only one night you should get away with free camping in the country. (I don't know what the law says. I've seen signs saying it's forbidden, so I assume if there is no sign it's allowed.) You can always ask a local farmer for permission.

Alternatively, for a completely different experience, approach a mairie and ask for the camp site for "les gens de voyage". Apparently every commune is legally obliged to provide a site for travelling folk (i.e. Gypsies). http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif
