Georgia and Armenia...need info on what to see and where to ride
 

Hey all,

I have received some excellent ideas on this site about where to go and what to see in Turkey.
Now I am after info about Georgia. Seems like there are some amazing mountains in the country but not so much in the way of information.

Got a KLR with decent tyres so easy off road stuff is ok by me. Getting lost in the mountains is really what i am after.
Any info will be more than appreciated.

We will be in Georgia and Armenia end of July. In Georgia we will ride the military highway from Tbilisi to Kazbegi (near the russian border) and then the region around Mestia (famous for it cupper craftsmen). Also some cities are worth a visit.

Roads in Georgia are not always paved, despite beeing posted as highway, so expect some portions unpaved. You will get enough info there (Tbilisi) but as general idea , Kazbegui, Mestia , Batumi and its autonomus region, bojormi , are worth a visit. Always ask for local info about the road status, whatever they tell you inat the tourist offices.

Armenia is more the same with regards roads , the main one crosses the country to the south ( Iran border), it is in good shape. if you decide to go to Nogorno karabah you will need to apply for a visa at its border. The good things is that generally the border police speak English and they tend to be quite friendly with foreigners.

Be aware the Armenia is has it border closed from Turkey and Azerbaijan.

I'm going to visit Georgia in late September. Does anyone tell me when start snowing in mountains. I want to reach Mestia (Svaneti) and Shatili (Khevsureti).

A friend of came back to Greece from Georgia with an Africa twin in the midle of October and there wasnt any snow, just cold in some high alititudes....

mestia you can do even in october...but ushguli and other remote villages no. even in june i've seen the road blocked with snow between ushguli and lentheki.

if you go in mestia you can stay in david zhorzholiani guest house (you'll find him in the loonly planet travel guide)...he is also a guide and speaks english. I've stayed there twice
