Ferry to Spain or Slog through France
 

Hi,
I have been looking at ferry prices and Spain looks quite pricy. Anyway if there is anyone out there with experience of one, the other or both I would appreciate it.

We have done both ways. The slog through France is quite hard and the long ferries can be quite boring so it really is swings and roundabouts. We have found a really good place to stay in France for a halfway stop. www.laroffiefrance.biz is run by a biker from yorkshire. They offer excellent accomodation with breakfast and dinner if required, (and lots of red wine). It's near Limoges.

Costs seem to be about the same, i.e. ferry price to Spain is quite expensive but if you take into account fuel costs, tolls and overnight accomodation in France it probably adds up to equal cost.

i did this trip in the summer (ferry to santander then back up through northern spain and the west side of france to cherbourg and over to bournmouth) and i'd agree with stephen in that there isn't a lot in it in terms of cost.

what you gain in, though, is time. you'll have more of it to make your way back - more time to venture off the beaten track, less need to take the motorways over the 'a' type roads.

i'd reommend it, myself - but don't do the bilbao two night crossing - that's more expensive.

Mayby it is worth to have a look at the overnight trains that cross France. You can take you bike on it. Will be pricy for sure. But gets you down South (or back home) in one night and you can jump on the bike after a good night of sleep. Not sure where to look. We used to have them out of Belgium but they stopped the service :-(((( If it excists you can find it on the net.

If the goal is to get to Marocce then it is best to go for Sete in South France and take the night ferry to Nador from there. If it al works out you can be in Marocco in less then 2 days!
