Ferries Magadan to Vladivostok
 

Can anyone reliably inform me if there is a ferry from Magadan to Vladivostok running, and can I pitch up with a bike a get myself on it or am I dreaming.

was in Vladivostok for a month last june (2011) and your dreaming lol only ferry available goes to South Korea , Get in Touch with Yuri in Vladivostok and ask for advice, i am not at home at the moment (in Ireland ) and not on my own pc so i have no further contact details but his name and e-mail appears often enough here.
I think your only chance is thumb a lift on a tramp steamer, see if Yuri can organise a container, or ride from Vladivostok .

There are no ferries, but there are ships between the two cities fairly regularly. There is a thread in this forum which lists contact info for various shipping companies.

From your post it sounds like you are going from Magadan to Vladi? Magadan is a small place, when we got there, we went to the port the next morning and had our bikes on a boat in the afternoon, but we were lucking with timing, you might have to wait a few days.

One of the shippers told us we would need a crate, but that was the first time I have heard of anyone needing a crate in Magadan; we ended up using a different shipper so didn't need to bother.

There is NO ferry.

Magadan is at the end of probably the longest dead end road in the World.
These days there is no assured way out - except back.


Magadan is a remote commercial freight shipping port - almost exclusively on internal (Russian) shipping routes to/from Kamchatka, Sakhalin, Vanino and Vladivostock.
The main freight out is refrigerated containers of seafood from the various legal and illegal fish farms along the coast.

There are regular summer sailings (more than one a week) to Vlad.
You will have to personally visit the various shipping agents in Magadan at the time, to find out -

1. Has their own shipping line got a ship going soon.
2. Will they carry your bike.
3. Will they carry you as well.

Each shipping agent works with a separate shipping line and they know nothing of their competitors expected arrivals/sailings.

These are ocean going container ships, but they will often take bikes for a fee.
Bikes are generally craned into the hold - further fees to the dockside crane operators and ship crew for their assistance.

They do not carry passengers although the Captain (at his sole discretion) will often agree to take you - unofficially, but for another fee. Otherwise you will have to take an internal flight (mine was on a old Tupolev that frightened me more than the Vitim Bridge!)

Flying time is about 3 hours. Shipping time is generally between 7-14 days depending on routes/stops.
Being 'internal' there are no Customs problems but security at docks (particularly Vlad) is difficult to get through to ensure things happen. Our bikes were almost literally dumped behind the railway station from the back of a flatbed truck.

Thanks for the info guys, sounds like it is possible but not entirely straight forward. I wanted to try and loop round, thus cutting out riding the same stretch twice but this plan is in it's infancy at the moment so trying to get a feel of what’s possible, what I do know at this stage is I will be going there next year.

Tony - if the flights more scary than the Vitim bridge then I'll defiantly be trying to get a ride on a boat!

It was an old plane, packed with pissed Russians going off on holiday. I was at the back where planes vibrate, sway or flex more anyway.

Russian airlines use better quality, foreign planes (Boeing or Airbus) on International routes than internal. Despite that, most flights achieve a round of applause on landing, even at Heathrow!

And there seems to be an air crash of some sort in Russia reported almost weekly, certainly monthly.

Somebody knows how fly -cargo , with the moto- from Magadan , Vladivostok or Anadyr to Nome, or some other place in Alaska ?

You will not get a moto air freighted from the Russian Pacific coast to Alaska or any USA/Canada Pacific coast - unless you charter a flight just for it. = $$$$$$.

Magadan only serves internal Russian destinations. Anadyr the same - but only one moto has ever reached there and that was after some truely heroic efforts for several months. Small private planes do occasionally use these airports for refuelling stops en-route to/from USA.

Your only real options are from Vladivostock where you should find a ship to Seattle or Vancouver or take a ferry to S. Korea from where there are flights and sailings to most of USA/Canada Pacific coast areas, probably including Alaska.

But it will not be cheap - freight aircraft are full, exporting S. Korean manufactured goods. Although they mostly return almost empty - so you could get a better deal doing it in reverse.
