Europe to India on a sports tourer
 

Hi all. i'm planning a 4 month trip to India from Ireland through Turkey, Iran and Pakistan leaving in August of next next year (08).
My bike is a 7 year old VFR800, While i'm conviced i would make it, i'd be concerned that a VFR would curtail the routes i could go on or just lead to extra stress (for me!!) if there's loads of vibrations etc. :confused1:
i'm wondering if anyone here has done this trip on something similar or have ant thoughts. Mechanically wise i'd be well confident of her but i'm concerned of poor road surfaces and how well she'd handle them. I'd like to be able to see and visit as many places as possible en route.

LMAO I'm crying here as I'm in the same frame of mind, take along a new shock or two and sub frame bolts, as they shear under stress I understand.

I've got a Dakar as most poeple know on here, and I'm really nervous about teh damn suspension dying on me, as I can't afford a £450 replacement.

At the moment i have 4,000/5,000 Euro that i could buy another bike with. Would a 1100GS/africa twin/tenere make my life far easier on that route?

I think it's peoples riding styles that break them, that and overloading the bikes and then riding rough ground, I went with the Dakar as it's a good cross between road and dirt but choice is what makes us interesting isn't it.

To answer your question even the big BMWs can get killed by the route you want to do, but I like your original idea of doing it on the sports tourer, as long as you can stand up on it and can get some good tires then let the fun begin I say.

The VFR will do fine in Turkey and Iran. My friends who have been Iran reported nice asphalt overall. And of course you will stay away from pathas and small village roads.

Starting at Pakistan roads probabily worsen. But take a look at the below link.
See how far he went with his Yamaha ... R1!!!!

So with VFR and a bit of luck you should manage.
