Europe from N Africa entry point??

Hi All,
As i keep saying, im doing a Cape to Cairo trip on my Tenere in April...
Im travelling on a South African passport and Carnet which is a peachy combo for everywhere in Africa exept Egypt. They wont let a skanky S African type like me in without paying a heafty 75% import duty on me bike!

My Cape to Cairo trip just wont be thew same without the Cairo part, but i can live with that, what i really want is to get into Europe from North Africa. What options do i have for this (Considering i will be in Sudan area). Is Sudan into Libya an option, then ferry from Tunisia? Are there any cheap options by sea from Port Sudan to Europe?

Any bright ideas will be appreciated.

Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim,
I think that Sudan to Libya will be tricky, due to the unstable political situation in southern Sudan. Also difficult to get Libyan visa. The same goes for the Fasher route into Chad.
I suggest you look into this scenario: In Sudan ride on a good, paved road over to Port Sudan on the Red Sea. There is a regular ferry over to Saudi Arabia (Jeddah). From there you can take the highway north into Jordan (avoiding Egypt), Syria, Turkey, etc. The difficulty may be to get a visa for Saudi Arabia. But I know of bikers who have managed that, one of them a woman!!!
Avoid doing this trip during the annual Hadj, when all the ferries are booked out by pilgrims. Try to get your Syrian visa before getting to Amman. In 2001 the Syrian Embassy there refused to give visas to any foreigner, only to Jordanian nationals. But things may have changed.
A great trip. You'll have the time of your life.
