Egypt to Eritrea or Djibouti

Hi,

I am driving around egypt and then need to get to Kenya/Tanzania area. The problem is that Sudan is too dangerous at the moment and being a woman, i would have to marry one of the men who i am driving with in order to go through Saudi and then get a ferry from there....
So... does anyone know if it's possible to get a Land Rover on a ferry from Egypt to Eritrea, Djibouti or even somewhere further south...
Does anyone have any other suggestions as to how to get south from Egypt with a vehicle avoiding Sudan (current civil war).

Thanks All!

Really?

I must admit that I am not following the news religously, but is Sudan really too dangerous at the moment.

I would have thought it was worth further investigation and/or trying to join up with other travellers. There seem to be plenty passing through Egypt these days (relatively speaking)

Personally, we found Sudan and the Sudanese great and didn't feel worried there. It would be a shame to miss it and I would have thought logistically more difficult to head around.

Drop us a line if in Cairo. We are always keen to hear the stories, see the pictures, reminisce about opur travels and dream of the next one.

I belıeve the border between Erıtrea and Ethıopıa ıs closed - those 2 countrıes are havıng theır own dısagreements at the moment.

Sudan ısn't havıng a cıvıl war - they are just demonstratıng agaınst the heavy hand of the War Crımes Commıssıon's decısıon - and theır western backers.

I don't thınk you are ın great danger crossıng Sudan (I passed through Sudan about 6 weeks ago). Try gettıng a vısa for Ethıopıa ın Caıro, then go to the Sudanese embassy and try gettıng a 10 day transıt vısa. If they don't ıssue you a vısa, then you'll know what the Sudanese thınk about the sıtuatıon.

You'll cross ın the northeast corner of Sudan, along the Nıle for the most part and a long way from Darfur. I don't thınk you'll have any problem wıth the people (ıts the governments have the problem wıth each other).

Thanks for your advice!

I'm glad to hear that you both think it might be possible to go through Sudan. We will have to look into it in Cairo.

Did you go to Khartoum when you were there 2nd poster?

Thanks all!

I had to stop ın Khartoum to regıster wıth the polıce - a condıtıon of my transıt vısa (mandatory wıthın 3 days of crossıng the border from Ethıopıa).

Khartoum was unremarkable ın terms of the sıtuatıon there towards westerners.
