east Africa advise wanted!
 

I'm going on a trip.. Holland - Cape Town, east side of Africa. But when I read the stories on this site it seems like no problem at all to travel threw Sudan and Eritrea.
I'm probably looking in the wrong places for info, but all the borders surrounding Sudan and Eritrea are closed for all traffic. So how do all these people (travellers) get in and out of Sudan? I've read it's not quite safe there..
Where and how do they get their visa?

Advise me, please!

I understand that the Sudan - Eritrea border is still closed. The border between Sudan - Ethiopia is open at Gallabat abd this is the usual route that overlanders take.

If you are coming south and want to go to Eritrea, you will have to go from Sudan to Ethiopia and then via Djibouti as the Eritrean - Ethiopian border has been closed for a long time.

Hi, We are travelling through Sudan and Ethiopia over the next couple of months. We have found that the Sudan Embassy in UK seem to change their Visa requiements on a daily basis so leave plenty of time if you want to get this before you leave. The visa starts from date of issue so you have to time it right. The applications have to go through Khartoum for approval except from the Cairo embassy and Addis Ababa Embassy. I understand that Visas can be issued within 24hrs in Cairo with the right paperwork. If you have problems contact George at the Acropole hotel in Khartoum, a very nice man who can help with your visa. He will ask you to stay in his hotel but thats only fare. As long as you stay away from West Sudan (Darfur) and probably the south still, as although the civil war is over now their is a lot of out of work disgruntled soilders moving back north, which may or may not poss a threat.

Sudan - Eritrean border is closed as is the Ethioian - Eritrean bored (alot of recent troop movement in the no man land between these two countries should be enough to keep most people away).
