Dual sport around Prince George BC
 

Hey there. There is a great little dual sport road north of Prince Geroge, British Columbia. It starts at a small town called McLeod Lake (130kms north of Prince Geroge) and runs west over the Omenica mountains to Ft.St.James. This road is suitable for the more off road oriented D/S bikes and should be run in mid July and August to avoid the winter snowpacks.

The road is wide but quite twisty in the beginning. You ride for 30kms until you reach Carp lake provincial park. From there the road gets narrower and more overgrown. Dont fret though, a good dual sport can make it no problem. After another 25kms or so you will find that you are getting higher up in the mountains. Now these mountains arent the rockies, they are basically large, rolling hills. You will intersect with an active logging road at just over 50kms. Keep heading west into Mackinnon pass and at 55kms there is a road that heads north. This road is a rocky, twisty cart track and is more suited for the off road oriented bikes. However, anybody with good riding skills should be able to take a heavier bike over the trail. The views of the surrounding valleys are great and you are getting quite high up in the Omenica's now. At the end of this north road (5Kms) is an abandoned forest fire lookout station that is kept in use by the Ft.St.James snowmobile riders club. In it you will find some supplies and fire wood. The lookout itself is fully enclosed and is suitable for camping in. The road ends at the lookout so you will have to turn around and head back to the Mackinnon pass road. From the fire lookout road to the O.M.A.R. road (Omenica Mining and Resources) it is another 50 kms west. The O.M.A.R road is a highly active industrial road frequented by all users (loggers, miners,hunters, and the like) so I would advise EXTREME CAUTION when riding on this road. The O.M.A.R. road runs north to south. South (40 Kms)is the small town of Ft.St.James. Ft.St.James is a full service town so you can re-supply there and plan more adventures. North is the old mining town of Manson Creek (ghost town, no services) and more relics of the gold rush era.

I've tree planted all over BC and the Ominica range is one of the nicest areas I have been to. All around Williston lake is great, but watch for vehicles on logging roads in BC! Some people (especially big logging truck drivers) feel that they are so far from civilization that they can drive however they want to, and if you're on a bike, you'd better get out of the way, cuz they're not going to slow down for you.

The road from Williams Lake to Bella Coola is another great route. You're sure to see some grizzlies.

I also reccomend the Squamish Valley road, its a bit rough when you get to the gravel but the first twenty clicks are amazing curves, all constant radius with very little gravel or seams in the pavement.

Another great little back road is from Trout Lake to Kaslo, good gravel, not much traffic, stunning scenery.
You can do it as a loop from Nakusp, or Kaslo, and tie it in with exploring the Kootenays... Cheers Peter
