DRC, Congo and Gabon

Greetings,

We are presently in Porto Amboim on the coast of Angola heading to Luanda today. Roads here have been a mixed bag, recently its been perfect tar tho.

Has anyone got advice on whoich route to take into the DRC (border crossing) and routes to Kinshasa and Brazzaville and then also into Gabon. I hear the road to Oyo from Brazzavile is decent. Any suggestions here would be appreciated.

Anyone needing advice on crossing over from Namibia into Angola at Ruacana border post and routes from there let us know.

Cheers Mark

Bad roads!

HI Mark,
Not sure about the other roads but the road through Maquela De Zombo was a nightmare... although we went through in the rainy season and that made it the road from hell. The road was so badly washed away, it was storeys high and we had to get through on the little goat tracks created by the local villagers. There were no other vehicles around and when we asked at the borders, the last tourist by bikes were 4 years back!
We thought it would be a short cut but supposedly there is Tar roads along the Matadi.
Check our site under Angola?congo for some photos of the roads
Good luck!
Ames

Hi Mark
We will be in Angola heading north/south and intend to use the Ruacana xing. So any upto date advice on the xing and the roads in Angola (we want to do the coastal route if its driveable) would be fantastic.

I second your request for any info on routes out/thro'/into the DRC. Can anyone help?:confused1:

Thanks
Peter

routes in congo, DRC gabon

hey.

we made it through the drc and congo

our route went from soyo over the congo river in muanda and then up into cabinda, the roads before the border into cabinda is shocking, deep sand... not for too long tho so its bearable; cabinda is ok. mostly tar; in the rep of congo we went to pointe noire, the roads were ok. after point noire, inland to dolisie they are shocking, deep mud; we headed north to nyanga border of gabon the road we terrible, and we were lucky it was not raining;
the road to lambrene is pretty bqd with deep potholes but before lambrene its perfect ar until the northern border with cameroon.

good luck;

4 years ago? Could have been us (Me - Meindert, Carl and Ed) took us about 5 or 6 days to cross the border into Angola and then onto Maquela De Zombo. Luckily the local UN intervened otherwise might still be stuck there.... Interesting road, covered by tall grass and lots of sandy ruts. I loved it.... Cant wait to do it again. This time with a KTM do...!

For me Gabon, Congo Brazza, Congo Kinshasa and Angola were the highlight of that trip back then.

Are you experiencing any evidence of the trouble in Chad or Niger? Things are getting worse and the evacuees and rebel groups are supposedly extending further west and south.

Hope all goes well with your journey.

Must have been you guys 4 years ago! Not sure how accurate the records were but not surprised as the roads were shocking!!! We had KTM engine starter problems, running out of water and my boyfriend came down with Malaria! Alas, what an adventure!!!!!
