Dalton Highway, Alaska

Hello All,

I am planning a trip to Alaska in June and I am riding from Anchorage to Deadhorse.

In planning the trip, I am getting conflicting information on trip times from Fairbanks to Deadhorse - any and all help in "demystifying" this part of the 400+ mile trip on Dalton Highway will be very appreciated.

Also, I am planning on renting an F650 Dakar in Anchorage from Alaska Rider, any information on them or any alternatives that you may recommend?

Thank you, sincerely for any information.

Your variables will be the weather, the condition of the road and how many hours you will ride in a day. Daylight won't be a problem. :)

Have you checked the mileage from Anchorage to Deadhorse?

Yes, daylight shouldn't be a problem :cool4:

Yes, it is a little bit of a ride from Anchorage to Deadhorse (~ 850 miles), I am breaking it up over quite a few days, but it;s the Fairbanks to Deadhorse part that I am most concerned about in terms of travel time.

FBanks to Deadhorse

Aside from weather, I think the biggest factor for your ride is your comfort and ability in off road conditions. That will translate into speed. You can get gas at the Yukon River bridge and then Coldfoot. The only other place I saw was a bushpilot's place just north of Brooks Range & Atigun Pass. When my riding partner crashed and his fuel spilled, we stopped in there and bought some aviation grade fuel to get to Coldfoot. It's best not to crash.
Anyway, you can get to Fairbanks to Coldfoot in anywhere from 10-14 hours depending again on your ability to skate across the gravel and stops for pics.
You can stop in Coldfoot for a room or set up a tent to split the ride too. The restaurant there was surprisingly good by the way.
Good luck on the ride. It'll be one you'll remember forever.

Thank you AJ

AJ,

Thank you very much for the very helpful information; I'll be trying my absolute best not to crash - in fact that will be the foremost item on my agenda . I did want to confirm: is it 10-14 to Coldfoot or Deadhorse? Also, in your experience is it true that the Highway is more trick in the first 90 miles, versus later sections?

As for off-riding experience, I have decent off-road experience, but it looks like Dalton Highway is a combination of dirt, loose sand and slippery rock; so unsure how I will fair in those conditions, especially if it gets wet. Nevertheless, I can't wait...

Dalton really isn't that big of deal. It's wide, it can be bumpy or a handful, but it can be done on a cruiser or GoldWing.

I ran from Coldfoot to Deadhorse to Fairbanks in one long day. That's about 750 miles. The most conservative riders take four days (Fairbanks->Coldfoot->Deadhorse->Coldfoot->Fairbanks), but it can very easily be done in two days with time to spare.

A note about camping at Coldfoot- remember it is light most of the night. If you have trouble sleeping, that isn't much fun. Rooms are about $90. There's a buffet in Coldfoot, but the food joint just past the Yukon River Crossing is much tastier.

Thank you ted

Thank you so much Ted, in addition to all the previous information that has been posted, yours has been extremely helpful.

I am having a little bit of trouble securing (renting) a bike, Alaska Rider tours are out of the 650 Dakar, I have contacted AdMo-Tours to see if they have any.

Regardless, very much looking forward to this ride...
