Crossing from Iran to Quetta
 

Anyone have any advice on crossing from the iranian border to Quetta.What I specifically want to know is, is petrol available along the way, or should I take a 20litre container full of petrol to get me to Quetta.I know its about a 600k run, and you have to get your skates on through Baluchistan.Im not worried about the army escort, just running out of petrol.

You can buy petrol from locals on the way at the road side, so do not worry... also, fill up from the people at the guest house on the Iranian side. You want to set off early, say 6am to ensure you get to Quetta before or around dusk.

It is best to do the crossing from Pakistan late afternoon, spend the evening at the guest house on the Iranian side (good food, hospitable but haggle over rates as always, no running water or electricity when i was there) and make that early start with a full tank.

The ride is quite pleasant really, with the main problem being the military check points... who usually want to spend to long talking to you! or offer to make you tea! just keep going as consistently fast as you can without over pushing it, as other traffic is worse for road manners than Iran... enjoy, but keep alert and whits about you on the long ride.

As always, enjoy the experience and Quetta is a facinating town to look forward to.

Many thanks for the advice.Funnily enough I spoke to a Korean guy on a bike this morning who has just come through Pakistan.He said the same thing as you, that there is petrol for sale along the way.I am going to leave Bam early and ride all the way to the border, camp overnight on the Iranian side, then head out early the next morning.i want to avoid staying in Zahedan, as from what Ive heard it isnt that nice a place.He said that there is a bit of tension in Quetta at the moment, but Ill have to wait and see when I get there.I think the situation keeps changing at the moment in Pakistan.

I did the trip the other way from Quetta to Iran last Oct, spent the night at the border on the Pakistan side. The ride was one of the best rides I had on my trip from Oz to Ireland, the locals along the way will be the friendliest you'll ever meet, take your time and meet the people along the way , I spent about 3 hours drinking tea with the Baluchistan police in the mountains, great guys, if your talking to them can you tell them Kevin said the pictures are on the way. You can get petrol along the way in bottles from little villages along the way. Watch out for camels along the road, you'll have a great ride through Pakistan, there wonderful people.

November -07, escort in Iran all the way from Bam to Mir Javeh, the Pakistani border. Very slow going, they sometimes chose to drive 60 kms per hour on a road that you could easily go double (as all other road-users did) plus they changed the escort car every 20-50 kms, and lots of waiting. Took 1 and a half days just to get from Bam to the border!

In Pakistan, however, much less escorts, in fact we were able to cross the entire desert to Quetta without them. They just stopped us at the checkpoints, and took up our details. Only a few cities and mountain passes in Pakistan had escorts then, and unlike their Iranian counterparts, they handled the whole thing efficiently.

In general, the escorts were a pain in Iran, and not so much in Pakistan. All this might be different now, though...

Crossed Pakistan in 4 days.No escort from Taftan to Quetta, but escort the rest of the way to Indian border.When they went slower tan 80kph, we just rode off and were joined by the next crew up the road.They were good for goig through cities, as they put their sirens on and cleared the traffic for us, bu too slow in the country.
