Carretera Austral and Ruta 40
 

We are in Santiago, Chile about to head south to Tierra del Fuego. What is the latest information on weather and road conditions along the Carretera Austral and Ruta 40. We're traveling two up on a heavy bike. What route, border crossings, etc. are recommended?

I'm just about to leave Santiago, butI came up through the Austral and route 40.

The weather at the time was awful but I believe it's dry now, and sunny. You'll find the roads are very hard on the bike and tires, so make sure your tires are in good condition and not half worn as they wear very qickly. Lotrs of pots holes, gravel but thankfully little mud.

Try searching for Fritz's remarks, he's travelling with his wife Bev(also two up) and may have had a hard time of it.

The boarders are fine, no problems very straight forward, I crossed at Chile Chico.
