Cape Town to Austria and back - under construction

Ola All,

So came up with the idea of riding up to Austria from Cape Town in 2010, idea would be to be in Austria for Xmass (have family there) Was reading over a few trips I was able to find last night.

So I was thinking of taking the East coast up and cutting under Egypt to Tanznia then across to Italy and up, has any one done this (read I cant seem to find reports, routes) please help me out with your advice, links.

I realize this is realy realy early stages of a dream/plan that will change and evolve etc.

I´m no expert, but I am under the impression, that western parts of Sudan, and all of Chad, are dodgy to say the least, and tourists may not be allowed entry at all. Even if you managed that, crossing into Libya from the south could be yet another bureaucratic challenge. Plus there is the largest desert in the world, that your route would cut in half...

I toured parts of Southern Africa some 7-8 years back, and Michelin maps of the continent seemed to offer pretty good value, might help you with the planning. From Cape Town up to Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and about halfway north into Mozambique the roads were actually pretty good, or at least they werent terrible... but I hear that central & northern parts of Africa can be a very different story.

Ahoy

Hey there!!

You planning on doing it alone? I'm from SA and is very keen to do such a trip myself. my fiance promised me a divorce if I#d attempt it alone so am also in the beginning stages of planning but surely gonna need a riding buddy. At this stage I'm thinking of traveling downwards only but am very open minded, so let me know what you think and maybe we can work something out. who knows...
