Camping in Eastern Europe
Hi
I am getting ready to go to Syria solo from Ireland (Austria, Italy, Croatia, MNG, and then either Albania/Greece or Serbia/Bulgaria into Turkey)

I am planning on camping to keep costs down. The advice is that it is neither allowed nor adviseable to wild camp in Eastern Europe -so that means campsites.

I believe that there are load of campsites in Eastern Europe and so my mind is eased somewhat. However, I am worried about how easy they will be to find enroute. My experience of campsites are that they are off the beaten track and aren't chanced upon casually.

I have no fixed itinerary and am hoping to find a campsite after 6-8 hours riding, or on the outskirts of the must-see towns.

Am I needlessly worrying about finding a safe campsite to stay in???

What advice from the road?

Try Google-ing something like "campsite croatia" or whichever country you are passing through. We found several campsites in each country on our trip to Romania and Slovakia, printed off the locations and addresses and then chose whichever was near towards the end of each day's riding. Found a couple of good Dutch-owned sites in Romania, the owners were a wealth of local info (places to see, roads to ride,etc...).
If you're on 2 wheels, try "motorcycle campsites Europe", for some bike-only or at least bike friendly places...although in our experience every campsite is bike friendly in anywhere else except here in UK!
BTW we wild-camped several times whilst over there, but beware of Bears in parts....ask locals if there is chance of meeting Bears in the locality before thinking about this option.

Austria, Italy, Croatia Camping
Hi there,

We passed through these countries July, August last year and found campsites really easy to find. If you can think of a place of interest or area there will pretty much always be a campsite nearby. Croatia in particular has some brilliant sites, cheap, clean and friendly.

We used the "head for about where you want to be" rule and keep an eye out for signs closer to the target. Sometimes we went a little further than we thought sometimes not. Just keep some cash on you because as you leave the more popular places, the use of credit/debit cards drops off too.

Hello,
if you are planning to travel through Serbia you would be well advised to check that your vehicle insurers will give you a Green Card for that country.
If you don't have one when you arrive there you have to buy one at the border, and, currently, it's 100 euros for a car, don't know how much for a bike. Maybe a better route for you would be Austria, Hungary, Romania and into Bulgaria.
There are lots of good campsites in Hungary and Romania, but little available info about them in the UK. The best camping site guide for this region comes from the Dutch motoring organisation ANWB.
Bulgaria has few good campsites worth stopping at, and it's very difficult to find information about them. As I run a campsite in Bulgaria I have to be very careful about not exploiting this excellent website, but, if you would like more information about Bulgaria just drop me an email by clicking my name above.
